I knew a few people who did this and they leased a 3.5 tonne van with tail lift. The UK market seems to be over saturated though and it is very competitive. There seems to be a lot of one man van businesses on places like ebay and other forums. The student market is a good one pre term and end of term etc.

I moved house myself last month and had a chance to sample the market, services and prices of potential competition.

Obviously not. But good to see what potential competition's prices, customer service and all round service were like.

have you checked the costs of insuring this kind of van for the purposes of removals - getting goods in transit cover as well as normal vehicle cover? And the public liability? it is not like insuring a van for normal 'domestic' use.
Signature removed for peace of mind

Try one of the 'backload' websites. If you do a removal from Manchester to Liverpool for an example, you can advertise that you are available for jobs in the liverpool area at a certain date and time. Most couriers or removals do this so the extra money pays their diesel overall for the day.Just type backloads on google and there should be loads there.

It’s on the list of things to research. Thanks. Do you have any experience in this?
