There are numerous threads about this on the Credit Card,Banking and Travel Forums.

As the situation keeps changing and as posters are giving up to date information is there any way the mods could integrate the latest posts under one thread?

  • I visit Canada regularly and Australia occasionally. Generally ATMs even at real banks charge about $3 in both. It does vary especially in Canada where mutuals and the like charge more, like $5. I recently withdrew East Caribbean dollars in St Kitts and St Lucia with a no-fees UK card. The bank in St Kitts (which only issued ECCA dollars) added a charge of $5US, which coverted to ECCA dollars at what I consider to be a disadvantageous rate. The ECCA/ sterling rate was fine of course (Mastercard daily rate).

Bizzarrely, the Scotia Bank in St Lucia, made no charge whatsoever (a Canadian bank!). It is becoming common practice unless you are a customer of the bank whose ATM you use. Always withdraw your maximum daily allowed amount if you can use it.

If anyone is visiting the Costa Del Sol, there has been lots of machines installed by Popular Bank/Targobank that were free. The Euronet ones charged. These are ones not at an actual bank but have recently been installed at shops and bars along the sea front.

I have just come back from Spain and used Bankia cashpoints to withdraw cash with my Halifax Clarity card. I used them because other ATMs said they would charge for withdrawals and Bankia didn't. However I have just checked my statement and they charged 1.75 Euro per withdrawal. This is fair enough if they tell you they are going to do this but it didn't. I have rung Halifax and they say I could try to raise a dispute but probably won't get anywhere. Beware.... once bitten.

Used Caixabank recently and wasn't charged a fee.
  • Best deal is a Santander basic current account and pay in the £500 minimum monthly payment which qualifys for fee free cash withdrawals at any Santander branded ATM in Spain (including the Balearics) and Canary Islands.

You can always pull or transfer the £500 immediately after it is credited, the account still meets the necessary criteria for the no fee ATM usage.
