Geneva Switzerland hotel stay

Hi all

Looking for a hotel for 7 nights in Geneva from 24th Dec 07 till 31st Dec.

Best I've got so fat is ETAP for £42 a night. But don't know if they are any good. Apparently they are a big chain. Does anyone know what to expect at ETAP, Geneva please?

Also if someone could suggest some better alernative (cheap but good), would really appreciate that.

Thanks for your help in advance...

MY only comment is that the ETAP hotel is not actually in Geneva it's in Vernier, if you're looking for a hotelt hat's actually in geneva then you'll want to be looking at a different one. My only other advice would be to avoid any hotels located on Rue de Berne, it's the heart of the red light district and you do have to wade through the prostitutes to get to your hotel!

I'd recommend doing a search on Venere - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too (which you also don't have to pay in advance)
PM me if you want a 4% discount code.

I think it's a good idea to check out this website even if you find hotels cheaper elsewhere, as the descriptions and maps are generally better than other sites in my opinion.

    Hope that helps

PS - I'm not connected to this website in any way, and I don't gain anything from this post. I also found the discount code on another forum.

herman2811, Venere is actually a very good site, thanks for sharing that.... It has a huge choice range and lots of review, howver, the prices are quite high too... I guess that's common in Geneva??

Not sure how much you want to pay but www.relaxabroad.com have Best western strasburg 3* for about £31 per person per night. It's in the Rue Pradier area not sure how good that is but friends of mine were considering booking it over new year. Probably best to read some reviews on the hotels first before booking anything. Trip advisor is normally good.

Cointrin is a bit out of the centre, near the airport (albeit on a direct trolleybus line to the centre). If you can stretch a bit Expedia have the Kipling, a nice little 3 star within walking distance of the lake/plenty of restaurants for £55/night double.

hi ive stayed at that hotel and believe me i wouldn't probably ever stay there again

it is on the other side of the lake from the city centre and although we had a car and the location was no problem the room is very basic exactly like a etap in fact the only difference is that this was not automated and had a receptionist

but having said that if you are looking for a budget hotel and do not mind the fact that all rooms are very minimal with sponge mattress it is the cheapest in that area. but i would rather if you have transport stay over in france and get to geneva by car you will save loads and only takes around 10 minutes

this is what we did after staying one night in etap

Thanks for your wonderful replies chaps

Boz38, you have got me thinking now with that site... There is a 4 star nash ville for £57 a night, no breakfast.. ETAP is £42 a night.. but I think you get quite a bit more with Nash Ville... Esp fridge in room as we would have a 20 months old baby with us..

Bunking off, the kipling is part of 6 Indian Manotels, very nice but doubles start from £67 a night.. A bit higher on the price side...

thuf, Booking in France was what I was going to do but my wife would need a visa going to France but not for switzerland, so we have restricted ourselves to switzerland only this time with Geneva as our base and make day trips to Zurich/ Bern other nice parts of Switzerland... any suggestions please?

We have been made aware of excellent public transport and also bad traffic, expensive parking, so we have decided not to rent a car...

If anyone has any tips/ suggestions for day trips to other parts os Switzerland using public transport, please let us know.

Thanks once again, you are all stars..

    Hi psarinuk,

Your choice, but NB Expedia have got a deal at £55 on the Kipling (albeit it comes up as not liking having 3 in the room). I don't know the Nash Ville, but personally would steer clear. It's on Rue De Berne which is the red light district. Best Western Strasbourg is very well situated for transport (bus stop outside), but is on a pretty busy street.

Never been to Geneva in the depths of winter so can't comment too much. Geneva station's a hub, though, so it should be pretty easy to do a day trip to Montreux or Berne. Lucerne & Interlaken probably means a change of train, but are worth a visit.

Interesting that your wife hasn't got a visa for France...I can't recall there being any border controls between Switzerland & France (e.g. the Geneva buses run straight through into France) - albeit if you went straight from the Airport you'd be going through French immigration. I guess it'd be risky as she'd be in hot water if caught in France without the correct documentation.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

We stayed at the Hotel Suisse in Geneva during this summer. We had 2 rooms for us and our two children. The hotel is very nice although the surrounding area was not what I rememberd from our last visit to Geneva, it has definitely gone back IMO. Anyway the hotel and breakfast was fine, very central. We checked out Trip Adsvisor first, and booked this through I think it was OTEL a Turkish company, TA give you lots of options and this company was cheaper than any other, and good value for money. We did the UN tour which was brilliant- a real eye opener and an amzing building.
