My top tips:
The Lateran Cathedral is less famous and so less visited than the others, but is still a fantastic building.
Make the most of the parks and public gardens: great for people-watching and for getting ready for the next gelato.
Most of the pick-pockets work in fairly specific places and particular bus routes: find out where those are so you know when you have to be particularly vigilant.0 -
It does sound a bit like Barcelona then for the pickpockets, and the street sellers.
We try our best not to look too 'touristy' anyway. There were plenty in Barca doing that for us. I don't know why folk want to walk round with giant flashy cameras tbh. Still each to their own.
I'm looking forward to lots of gelato now :rotfl:BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.

Hiya. If we can avoid getting a taxi, then some advice would be most appreciated, thanks very much

We are going for 4 days. Landing at Fiumicino just after midday. I keep seeing 'Termini' & 'Metro'. I just got a bit confused and wondered about the best deals on passes, etc (like the T-10 that you can get in Barca)
Thanks again.
If there's only two of you then your best option from the airport to the city is by train.
When in Rome there are various passes available for public transport. Here's a useful link.

If you have experience of Barcelona then you should be able to deal with Rome as they are the two worst cities I have ever been to for pick-pocketing.0 -

Watch out for the teenage girls on the metro - they run up the escalator behind you, if successful in picking your pocket run back down again and/or pass to another girl. I don't think it was quite as bad as Barcelona. In both cities you really have to keep your wits about you, especially on public transport.
You'll love Rome!0 -
The gelato is amazing and cheap. We ate ice cream every day:D0

Don't forget the Affogato; a hot espresso poured over a scoop of gelato. Delicious and a great way to recharge your batteries for more sightseeing!0

I've never understood the angst about pick pocketing in Rome Or indeed Barcelona. Been to Barcelona numerous times and never had a problem.
Been to Rome twice and never felt unsafe.
Maybe we were just lucky, but like any mayor city you need to have your wits about you and keep vigilant!0 -
We walked everywhere in Rome, didn't need to use PT (other than getting in and out on the train, we stayed in Ciampino).
Take an empty water bottle, loads of fountains everywhere where you can fill up drinking water.
Go to the Trevi fountain late/evening, daytime it's packed.
Do walking tours, this one was good http://romesultimate.com/free-walking-tour/ as they limit numbers, you have to reserve but it's free (tips only). We did another which was also good but were about 40-50 people on it.
Can get a 2 day ticket to Colosseum/forum/Palatine hill, we bought it late on one day when there were no queues and a day and a bit was enough time to see everything.
Eating was cheaper than we expected, though we had our main meals at lunchtime.
Enjoy - it's an amazing city!0 -
