It is actually true, most 'fully synthetic' oils are not, as we would understand it, fully synthetic. The oil companies use a different definition. Each to their own but I don't think it's worth worrying too much about unless you have a car that is fussy about oil.
I'm no oil expert but from the limited bits I've read most of the claims of synthetic oil not really being proper synthetic are from highly priced oil brands justifying their products price!
i know its wikipedia but i cant bring myself to trawl the net for a more official source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil
as someone above said, you want PAO / ester oil for actual full synth.
however i cant imagine you would want real full synth in an astra. but if the goal is helping your engine, well, they are better. a lot of reports abound that they have increased cleaning capabilities which can reveal oil leaks which had been plugged by gunk. they don't however cause oil leaks like some others say, just reveal preexisting ones.
personally i run my Jeep on fuchs race pro s, expensive but good.0 -
The base stock (mineral, semi- or full-synth) won't make a difference to how quickly the oil visibly changes - but that doesn't affect how long it lasts anyway.RomfordNavy wrote: »Hopeing it might last a bit longer than semi-synth before going black
I tend to get oil from Opie - https://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w40-engine-oil.aspx
Five litres of Fuchs Titan - £17 plus a fiver delivery (free over £60 - I tend to buy 20l at a time). https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-990-fuchs-titan-syn-mc-10w-40-high-performance-semi-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx0 -

Just serviced my sons Corsa and got 25% off online. Genuine discount as well as the price before discount was still cheaper than Halfords.0
