Plan to change Sky+ to Freeview, help please

I am planning to sack Sky +(current package is variety mix/music mix-cost £17.00 month).
for what we actually watch on TV is probably would be more cost effective to geta Freeview box.
I have checked that we are able to get coverage in our area .
My question is we currently have a magic eye in our upstairs bedromm and we are able to watch sky and change channels upstairs.
With a Freeview box will the Tv remote both downstairs and upstairs change the channels .
Probably a stupid question but I would appreciate any help

The cheapest option is probably Freesat from Sky. If you cancel, you will be able to get most of the Freeview channels. Im not sure of the magic Eye, but cant see why it wouldnt work. Id ask Sky.

If you cancel Sky, your existing card will act as a Freesat Card, it will allow you to watch Ch4, Ch5's and Sky 3, a card isn't required for all other free channels.

Your Magic Eye will only work with Sky Receivers, not Freeview Boxes.

With the cost of freeview boxes now, I'd just buy a spare one from Asda/Tesco/etc and have it in the bedroom. The only issue would be if you wanted to watch a recorded program from your PVR on the main TV which you wouldn't be able to do.

I'd recommend the Humax 9200T as a PVR for freeview btw.

Also a TV Aerial is required for a Freeview Receiver, the existing Sky Receiver is already working and connected to it's dish.;)

I have just spoke to Sky and of course I knew that they would talk me out of downgrading.
They offered me sky movies for 3 months for just 50p more per month.
which I didn't think was too bad so I have decided to have this package for the next 3 months.I will then ring them again to cancel and see if they can offer me anything else.I might even push for an upgrade to a Sky HD box;) They did also ask if i would be interested in having their Broadband and skytalk package for £10 a month which doesn't sound too expensive, but I will probably do a bit more research on this before I decide to do that.
Thanks for all the help offered
  • Yup, if you cancell the sky subs you will be able to get freesat without having to fork out the £20 for the freesat card.

However, you will loose all your recordings on the sky+ box and you wont be able to record from freesat. You will have to pay sky £10 a month to retain the recording features.

You magic eye will continue as normal.

If I were you I'd keep freesat rather than get a new frewview box. Loads more channels than freeview and you wont have any problems with a signal.

Your kind of going down the same path I am....cancelling SKY for Freesat.

Trouble is I would really miss Sky+ and would have to buy some sort of DVD recorder to replace etc....

So was going to just pay the £10 and do that and now they have written to me saying "sorry you're leaving, stay and have a free Sky+ box"

Hmmm do I stay and just get a newer Sky+ box I wonder?

Who knows, might be a good standby if this one goes wrong and is something for nothing almost.

They're obviously desperate to keep people.

Depends what you want to do. If you intend to cancel Sky, theres no point as you cant record without a subscription.

Oh I didn't realise that so if I decide to cancel and just have freesat I wouldn't be able to record any programmes?
