My Landlord has disappeared and I want to move now.

    I'd assume they'd died under those circumstances.

    I'd contact the old estate agent and explain the situation, appealing to their better nature to try to help you in your quest to discover if they've died.

    Downloading the land registry might be helpful, but it might just have your own address, or the landlord's old address on it.

    You need to find out all/more about your landlord, write down what you know ... what you think you remember. Married, local, foreign, bought the place/inherited it ... and what's their name.... then google for any leads you can to trace their current address. Once you have a clue of a town/county, you can then trawl local newspapers and even TheGazette for death notices etc.

    It's possible that whoever is dealing with the estate doesn't yet know about the place you're living in ... it might be that the landlord had no children, so the executor is having to pick their way through boxes of papers at their home address and it might be one of many cases they're looking at.

    I'd just serve notice by recorded post on whatever address you have in your tenancy agreement. If you don't have a current tenancy agreement, you don't owe any rent anyway or have any notice to give.

    You can't squat in residential premises any more, they changed that to prevent people's homes being taken over. Some people only popped to the shops ... and others came out of hospital.... to find squatters.

    The OP HAS a tenancy agreement - the first one they signed has been rolling on ever since.

    No, it's not worth reading up on squatters rights because a) the OP is not and will never be a squatter since (s)he has a legal right to be in the property, and b) the OP wants to leave the property.

    There is a tenancy agreement in place, either a Contractual Periodic Tenancy or a Statutory Periodic Tenancy which can only be ended by the tenant or a court. Since neither the OP has served notice yet nor a court granted a possession order the tenancy remains.

    Get the owner's details from the land registry. Attempt to get them from the previous rental agents.
    Send your notice to the best address you can find. That might be the same address you live in. But keep proof of postage and a copy of the notice you send. Keep all rental payments up to the end of your notice period in a separate bank account and keep it there for 6 years..
    Then just move out.
