Depends on what the service it. It sounds like you've got an openreach cable carrying multiple pairs. But if it was that it should be in a grey duct. How much have you exposed? Can you take some photos?

Put in a spare duct, with several pieces of string going the full length of the duct. That way if the cable needs replacing, you can just pull it through the duct without digging it up

A very small section of the cable is exposed and inside is grey/silver fibres.

We need a photo. With a ruler next to it for scale.

'grey/silver fibres' could mean anything from optical fibre to damaged SWA or SY cable carrying mains voltage.

Got a photo but struggling to attach. Guess that's a question for another forum.

You can't attach a photo to a message on MSE. Use a picture hosting site eg tinypic and paste the URL in to a message.

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm using flikr but when I preview the message it shows the picture within my flikr account home page (which shows my personal details) as opposed to the picture only. Thanks

Open a new flikr account called pennysweets, or use a different host.

Just use tinypic. Gets the job done, and I think they delete your pic after x months of not being looked at.
