Yes, I have a very good local gas technician who services my boiler and gas fire annually. Are you the house across the road?

I had it done last week, cost me £50, you may get it cheaper if you can get them competing on price.

Good idea. It's definitely one of those jobs you want to drive the price down on. After all, it's not as if it's safety-critical, is it. As long as the warranty is protected, that's the main thing.

And who cares if they do not connect a laptop, or analyse anything. All anybody wants today is cheap, cheap, cheap. Why pay £50, when a phone call could get a test certificate without anybody calling by to look at anything? You might get £25 then.

But if the work has been bodged and a guarantee claim is made, quite correctly, it is the home owner in the problem zone.

There is even a post running at the moment where the boiler location is causing a problem. Typically today everything is somebody else fault, and no personal accountability. Which means after 11 years the complainant wants to take a pop at the installer. "I am the client and I paid for this, but not my fault governor". What is the world coming to?

I wouldnt know if £50 or £80 was cheap, I also am not aware if he needs to connect a laptop or clean the burners, since it was working ok beforehand. The hot water was set at a lower temperature, I guess he did a reset because it is now much hotter.

Todays society has dumbed down to such an extent it means those of us with construction industry experience can shake our heads in disbelief and wonder why we bother.

Take your approach - play one contractor off against another to drive down a price when you have no idea what work has to be priced, nor what work may be done, and then no idea whether the work has been done correctly.

It is your home, with your boiler, and you are inviting somebody in to work for you. You are the client. Do you not believe you have a duty of care to yourself to be more professional?

Indeed. And the result is that we are then faced with lots of threads saying something like "I was scammed by a plumber/gas fitter/electrician who charged me an extortionate amount for work I'm not sure needed doing."

Awarding a contract to the lowest bidder to carry out work you haven't a clue about and which is safety-critical is more comical than anything I could come up with.
