Rights after expiry of 24 month contract on ‘flagship’ Sony Xperia

  • "Winning in the small claims court wouldn't set a precedent. I would establish how specific and clear the "6 year rule" is." Fair points.

I wonder if, from a consumer rights point of view, people are fully aware that their very expensive handsets are not covered in the same way as other electrical items, that a 'reasonable amount of time' (Consumer Rights Act 2015) will likely be limited to the duration of the contract only?

    Thank you mobile junkie.

I rang Tesco to clarify..........they only offer a warranty for 2 years, so you are correct

  • "You spent £1352 on a contract for accessing a mobile phone service, which included a handset. How much of that went toward the phone is a moot point.

You could try Vodafone's complaints procedure and also try complaining to Sony, though I wouldn't hold out much hope. Just ensure you don't buy Sony again."
    Fair points PMDUK.

Actually I think about a quarter was towards the phone...feeling a bit less cheated now...

The percentage is neither here nor there, though you have now confirmed that you didn't spend £1,352 on a phone.

My Sony Z3 is over three years old now, and has behaved faultlessly.

I can honestly say that it's the best phone I've ever owned and would have no hesitation in buying another one.

I think that it's quite possible that you can be unlucky enough to get "Friday afternoon" models (Lemons) of many items these days.
  • How a phone lasts depends a lot on how it was used during the time period.

A phone only used in the home environment and treated gently is more likely to last than one in the hands of a teenager out and about or one where it sits in a hot car for most of the day.

From your description it sounds like the battery getting hot and swelling, which obviously causes other issues.

It might be worth appealing to Sony customer services to see if they can do anything. Be nice to them and they might be able to help :)

Edited to add: the list price of the Z3 at launch was £549 and that was nearly 4 years ago.
