SS, have a look here. It lists all the common Kernel32.dll faults. You should be able find yours in there.....loads of info on possible causes too.I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

For Control Panel try running control.exe, probably in Windows folder or in system or system32 folder beneath it.0

Edit: DH has just come in from garden - no sense of priorities - very happy at the idea of running control.exe, I'm obviously completely confused at this point (although you should have seen me earlier when DS1 and 2 were discussing whether it mattered if the 17 giga (?) bytes we needed to back up the system were large or small!)
OK, while I've been typing, DH has done control.exe and gets the same error message as before so he'll spend some time looking at the other suggestions!
It's a good job there are non-windows computers in this house, and we have managed to backup the vital documents to one of them! (We think ...)Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Try booting to Safe Mode and see if you can run the repair util. I think you have to use the CTRL key for safe mode on Win98. Just turn the PC on then tap CTRL repeatedly until you get the boot menu. Choose Safe Mode and see if Windows will load.He huihuinga taangata he pukenga whakaaro – A meeting of people; a wellspring of ideas (Maori proverb)0

Tried that. Booted into Safe Mode, but we have the same problem.Signature removed for peace of mind0

c:\Windows\System\Sfc.exe0

you could attempt to run explorer manually,
Hold down "CTRL" +"ALT" and press "DELETE"
Click on file or task, run.
Type "c:\windows\explorer.exe"
or
"c:\windows\system\explorer.exe"
Does this work?0 -
Thanks for your suggestions, but...
I can run SFC, but can't find a good version of Explorer to restore.
SFC identified 8 problems, but not one with Explorer, or anything else that looked remotely promising.
Explorer crashes, no matter how I try to run it - from the command line, from the Office utility, or anywhere else.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
DH has managed to restore Explorer, but the problem persists. I think his solution is to take it back to the shop for a full healthcheck ...Signature removed for peace of mind0

reinstall win98 over the top if you want to keep your files & settings, this will fix all system errors.0
