Win 98 Boot Problem

Apologies if this has been answered before...

We are running Windows 98. On boot-up, an error message appears, talking about an error in Explorer. We have the Office Toolbar but not the Windows taskbar or the desktop. We can run individual programs, if I know the file name and location.

I would like to run the Windows 'Detect and Repair' utility. Can anyone tell me the name and location of the executable?

Youngest son is going cold turkey without Civ 3 and instant messaging his friends, so a quick answer to this will not only be appreciated, but may save a life...

If you can get to start and run try running this

    scanreg

That should check your windows registery for errors.

    Trying that now ...

No, no joy with either of those, we still have a problem with Windows Explorer.

Still hoping for the executable location ...

If you're looking for the disk scan program I think this might be

    C:\windows\scandskw.exe

Not sure this will solve your problem. From a quick look on the net it could be due to a virus or perhaps damaged/missing file. Can you give more details of the explorer error message?

Thanks, but no, it's not the disk scan program we're trying to access - can get to that but it just loops round and round without ever finishing. We'd like to try Detect and Repair on Explorer.

Yes, it could be a virus, but AVG ran this morning without picking anything up.

    The message reads:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
    module SHELL32.DLL at 0167:66869ad4.

    Does that help anyone?

I know there is a repair option in Internet Explorer but the Explorer here is Windows Explorer and I don't know of any repair.

I suggets you put your error message into Google perhaps without the numbers at the end (0167..) and follow some links to see if anything looks useful.

I've tried a google, but no wiser. DH says he'll settle for getting the Control Panel open - any suggestions for how to do that?

While I'm looking into Control Panel, try reading here and related posts

I think some people just settled for changing BIOS to boot from cd and reinstalling Windows, usually as last resort
