Halifax Savings Made Dormant

13

Comments

  • UPDATE.
Finally have a reason for making the account dormant.
Halifax say that it was the lack of account holder actions, that made them make the account dormant.
The fact that it was a savings account and money was going in quarterly, doesn't keep the account active. The holder has to go in and make a transaction.

Also there was a lack of proper communication from Halifax regarding these activities.

Now waiting to see what the next move is.

    I'll be back.

Gasp! That can't be right! If it is, a lot of people will be in a lot of trouble when they discover their accounts are dormant.

Is it the actual account or your online access to it that's been locked?

    I've never heard the like.

With on line banking, there must be thousands of people who never visit a branch.

Is there anything in the terms and conditions of your account which specifies that all transactions/some transactions/ one transaction a year etc etc must be made in branch?

Have they explained all this in writing?

Given that this all appears to make no sense (and would impact on vast numbers of holders of similar accounts if applied across the board), I'm wondering if there may be some sort of mix-up where they're actually just saying that they're freezing access to the account until you pass their ID verification check, rather than literally making an active account dormant as such?
  • Hi sjp999.
The actual account was made dormant.
Since that time, no statements or other paperwork connected with the account have been sent to me.

    Wow

Not doubting you, I see plenty "timed out due to inactivity" get me back in access requests I'd hoped it would be that simple for you.

Time for an official complaint if you haven't already, the FOS if you have.

    Best of luck

I must say I have never heard this happen, and still stand by it was an ID issue which blocked your account rather then dormancy, granted I only have twelve years experience, so maybe in the past was possible.

Not having a transaction on the account doesn't force dormancy as there are plenty and have been many accounts in the past that don't allow withdrawals on the account till maturity so thats no transactions in or out and those that have access to pay in also have access to withdraw some with limitations like notice required, so having no transactions on account is common depending on the account.

I hope the ID issues have been sorted and you have access to your account again.

  • UPDATE.
Due to other arrangements, this was put on hold for a month.
Halifax have admitted that there was a fault and have covered the cost of postage phone calls etc.
Unfortunately, I still had to go into a shop and prove my identity, this took two hours, the manager of the branch and two assistants, to get the right documents accepted.
They have now been sent off to head office, to be checked and they will let me know in a day or two, if the account has been activated again.

They re-iterated that the lack of a withdrawal by the account holder, is what triggered the dormancy. Supposedly, a letter was sent to me explaining that the account would be made dormant, but, as usual, this never arrived, along with a lot of our mail, as we had a dyslexic postman for a while.

Possibly, my account will be active again, within a few days. I will let you know.

You were able to provide two of the documents as required?

And it took three people and two hours to look at them and even then they had to be sent to Head Office?

And you have other accounts with the Halifax that you do currently access?

In your shoes I would be making a formal complaint.

    And you didn't complain?
