Friendliest Bank

Which is the most friendly ? I find HSBC and Barclays to have good helpful staff in-store.

OK, of whom, and how is it objectively measured? For example, how do I rate the helpfulness and courteousness of online/app banking if all my contact with the bank is online/via app?

In my experience the friendliest staff are found at Metro Bank (and some of the most abrupt and rude service I've ever received has been at Halifax and RBS, for that matter), although this is likely to come down to the staff at the individual branch rather than the bank's overall policies or ethos. So I'm afraid OP may have asked an ultimately unanswerable question.

To expand - I work for a bank myself (as the signature implies) and in my brief time with the company have worked at eight different branches in greater London. Even allowing for the subjective nature of the question and the inherent bias in my being an employee, the customer service from branch to branch was like night and day. At best, the bank had a real community spirit, cheerful staff, excellent relationships built up with regular customers including understanding the needs of older or disabled customers. Customers would pop in just to chat to staff or surprise us with a box of chocolates. At worst, I've seen customers sobbing with frustration in the banking hall after getting short thrift from members of staff who resemble something out of a Little Britain sketch: "computer says no, refer to the terms and conditions and call the helpdesk, now clear off, oh and if you receive a feedback call about my service today please consider giving me a ten out of ten".

All of these branches operate on the same policies, all offer the same products and services, the difference is how the physical space is managed, how customer expectations are managed, and the personalities of the individual staff, which are a spectrum from "can-do" to complete jobsworth. And that's why I have no interest in a career in management - just getting people to turn up and do the bare minimum of their job role is like herding cats.
    : )
  • So basically you work for Metro Bank then!

Let me just nip around to all of the thousands of bank branches in the UK and spend hours calling up every single phone banking line so I can rate each and every individual on their friendliness. I'll be sure to measure all their smiles with a ruler and protractor and use a little measuring device to measure the pitch and tone of their voice so I can ensure that they meet the Official Friendliness Quotient For Bankers.

I'll have the results back in about six months give or take but once I do you can be assured of the most objective answer possible.

I've found most bank staff okay as long as you are fine with them.

Same with other from other firms.

As for this thread I find the RBS staff when Ive phoned up were ok, in branch any of the staff are ok.

OP you do realise not all banks have the same teller so your research is a little flawed, you could the 1 area where the banks employ staff who aren't nice yet staff in the same banks are great in other parts of the country.

I don't use friendliest as a criteria when looking for a bank, I look at what they offer eg benefits for example Lloyds I get 1 years worth of Empire I have a club account.
