Currently with Virgin Media, not sure if I can shop around

Options
So at the moment I pay £26.54 to Virgin Media for Fibre Optic. I don't know if this is a good deal. I had looked at switching to a cheaper provider but the problem is, the BT box is on the other end of the room and there isn't a power socket there. So we wouldn't be able to have the wifi there because how would we power a router. Anyone else had something similar? I don't want to trail wires across the floor as we have two dogs.

Or is £26.54 a good deal for VIVID 100 Optical Fibre

Have another power socket installed or the BT box moved whichever proves easiest/cheapest.

I'm utterly useless at this sort of thing, but there are literally no power sockets on that side of the house - the cost of installing one might out weigh switching to a cheaper provider?

Are you happy with 100Mbps - if yes can you get that with BT?

BT OR ISPs will not match 100 meg .
Price up alternatives and see if you can negotiate with VM .

Don't need any faster, but when we downgraded to 50meg with Virgin it ground to a halt. I might just see if I can negotiate a deal with Virgin. We don't need TV as we watch freeview and the house manages on that internet speed even with loads of devices running from it.

What speed do you get exactly on your 100Mbps? Were you getting the full 50Mbps on your previous contract? If yes then you're a heavy user and need to stick with Virgins 100Mbps, that's not a bad price btw, how long do have left on the contract?

You are getting a discount on the list price , when I was a Virgin Media customer I was paying somewhere between £33 to £35 for 70Mb, so , if you are getting 100Mb for less than £27 , sounds quite reasonable.

you probably want to check if Openreach FTTP is available and what speed is predicted for your address , if it's acceptable, then finding a provider for under £27 will probably be possible ( but not by much ) and then you would have to factor in the cost of providing an extension phone socket near to where you want to place the router , if you could get an independent installer to do this for around £50, and a FTTC deal could be had for £25, it would be a couple of years before the £2 a month 'saving' pays for the extension

Plus setup costs which seam to be increasing to silly amounts.

It's like they don't want us switching lol
  • How about a DIY telephone extension kit? For example https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-telephone-extension-kit-20m/p/0342523 for £9. (many other suppliers are available)

Having said that, if you were maxing out your 50Mb/s service (that should be enough to stream 10 HD videos at the same time!) you're probably going to want to check what speed you can get via the BT line before deciding.

    I'm paying £25pm for 100 Mb/s with Virgin Media so I don't think you've got a bad deal.
