You're the person looking at it so you will know what's going on more then me, just make sure it's not partially opening. Just enough to allow a little heat through but force most of the heat up through the bypass.

For those following this thread this is what the result of British Gas changing your boiler causes... the black gunk is paper towel - probably used to stuff a weeping pipe prior to soldering.

My draining and refilling the system obviously shifted the paper further around the system until it hit the zone valve, blocking it, or at least allowing just a trickle of water to flow, hence thinking the valve was ok as it was getting hot after the valve :(

Many thanks to those who offered ideas and solutions, especially Alex: this is one to add to the ever growing list of f***ups that BG seem to cause.

Their diagnosis would probably be "it needs a powerflush" ...

Wouldn't let BG anywhere near a paraffin stove let alone a CH system. I have a full history of BG spending over 2 years trying to fix an overheat fault resorting to the final recommendations of a) powerflush then b) new boiler. The system has not missed a beat in the 2 years since I, a mere amateur, diagnosed and fixed it.

Whereas I've had BG out twice & they were brilliant both times. I suppose it depends who turns up.
