Can anyone with more experience with me tell me what this is - it's fitted as though it's a bypass valve....

Pressure reduction valve?Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Non return valve0

It's a pressure differential valve.
Google syr pressure differential valve and you find images off it.0 -
OK, I'm presuming this acts as the bypass valve: if the flow seems to be going thru this route rather than thru the coil (and the two port is open) I presume I have an airlock in the coil?
Can I wind down the bypass in order to force the flow thru coil and flush out airlock? And how? Didn't seem to want to budge...
Thoughts?

You will be able to adjust it down, take the nut off and spin it in, it won't shut right off though.
I guess its a pressurised system, be surprised if it's air locked, are you sure the zone valve body is opening?0 -

Yeah, megaflo, primary inlet to coil hot after zone valve, cold on primary return.
The bypass seemed to be taking all the flow as was hot, thus I'm presuming airlock.
Bottle air valve also failed, so I'll replace that to vent properly.
CH fine.
Any other pointers??Perfection takes time: don't expect miracles in a day0 -
I'd whip the zone valve out when you dump the pressure to change the auto air vent and make sure it's moving and if a Honeywell make sure the ball has not swollen. You could just loosen top connection of coil to see if water or air comes out.
If there is a issue with the zone valve the bypass will get hot as there is no where for the heat to go.0 -
I'm 99% the zone is ok as the flow goes part it into the coil.
Will do all other suggestions and hope
Cheers Alex
