Egypt Sickness

Options
Hi first post on here.

Quick overview :-

Booked for 2 weeks through ON THE BEACH to Egypt - Fell really ill whilst there had to come home 1 week early, costing £900 in flights. I was in hospital over there and the medical bill was rising and rising , i had to pay up front so insurance is useless if you don't have the money spare.

I have been told there is nothing i can do as ON THE BEACH are not classed as package holiday company..Someone must be responsible.

£3000 holiday
£200 on excursions lost
£900 on flights
£800 medical bill

Surely someone can help :(

Why can't you claim it back off the insurance - you may have had to pay up front but if you contacted them when you became ill you should still have a claim.
Did they agree you should return home early?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • They wanted to take me into hospital at a cost of £2000 up front, it is money we don't have. So we had no choice to come home.

    Is "they" your insurance company?

I think you should post details of your travel insurance company: it sounds as if they, rather than your travel agent, are the ones who have seriously let you down.

It is your travel insurance company that has let you down over your medical care.

With regard to any holiday Compo - On the Beach is correct that they have no liability. Unlike when you book with a real tour operator, OTB has cobbled together the travel arrangements and your claim would be with either the Egyptian hotelier or via whatever bed bank OTB bought the hotel rooms from. Chances of any successful claim are likely nil.

Was the illness as a result of something wrong at the hotel or just bad luck?
Did anybody else eating or drinking the same foods/liquids also fall ill?

Ill enough to require hospitalisation but not medically unfit to fly.

How do we square that circle?

Did you call your insurance immediately upon falling ill?

Ultimately, the answer about who's responsibility it must be is ....... yours.

So just to be clear, the insurance company wanted you to pay 2K up front?

What did they say when you said you didn't have it and you would be flying home?
I'm a bit confused because your initial post says you were already in hospital and your later one says they wanted to take you in with the upfront cost.

Perhaps if you post a clearer time line including contact with the insurers you can get more meaningful advice. With insurers the devil is often in the detail.

    I'll read between the lines:

You fell ill with food poisoning - the hotel suggested you go to hospital and recommended the hospital - as they would get a big kick back off it. They said £2k upfront so you chose to come home.

I don't think you'll get the flights money back as that was your choice (the new ones), you'll not get the original flight back as that will go down as a no show. nor the hotel unless you try and contact the hotel to see if they will refund a bit with good will.

Normally with insurers you ring up when you are Ill and they say where to go so they will cover it. You get given a number to call then they deal with it.

If you'd asked any at the hotel they would have told you what medication to take as a heck of a lot get ill and there's often pharmacies on site to help. A few need medical intervention but I'm surprised it would cost that much. If you have receipts then I'd possibly ring up and see what the insurer says, you might get some back but it depends on your excess too.

If you were so ill that you had to go to hospital I am surprised you were well enough ( or allowed) to fly home, lots of people get tummy trouble in Egypt, usually gone in a couple of days with the medication you can buy in the chemist there. I think all of the holiday places abroad over react when it come to D & V they all put you on a dip, it wouldn't usually happen here unless you are old or pregnant

I agree. I've been ill in places with reciprocal healthcare and the local hospital has sent me home with sachets of dioralyte. Drips seem to be a favourite of private clinics.
