Tesco taking a liberty !

WARNING When I paid off my Tesco credit card with a substantial £4.5 K, they tried to treble their takings by making THREE applications for the same amount !
Only that I looked at my bank statement after being refused a small withdrawal, I would not have known.
How can they do this ? Imagine if the boot was on the other foot.

You paid it, or asked them to take the money, if the latter, how did you ask them to take it?

    By debit card.

I assume on the phone then. If they have taken the money several times. Ask them for it back, plus interest lost and cost to you in phone calls and time.

Thankfully, I was just in time. The bank has stopped the other payments !
One was due out tomorrow morning !!!

  • MBNA did this to me too, for a smaller amount right enough, but I assumed their computer was going slow and the person was a bit click-happy!

To flippantly say that it was just a mistake on behalf of poor little Tesco is missing the point. Mistake or not it was an attempt to wrongly remove about £10K from my bank. It prevented me from gaining access to my money, and at a different time of the month would have prevented my mortgage, council tax, insurance, etc being paid. In short, it could have been a disaster for me.
The 'mistake' would have taken a long time to rectify, as I know from previous attempts to locate missing payments to Tesco.
I repeat my first question: How can this be allowed to happen ? Why didn't their system see the !!!!-up immediately ?

  • I agree with making a complaint with Tesco, try going straight to the top and e-mailing Tery Leahy, the CEO. If you need the email address please reply or send me a pm and I will send you it.

Dont forget to mention the FSA, Ombudsman (which they get charged £500.00 + VAT if they are used) and also the Information Commissioners office.

I can give you some tips about what else to write, I am a professional complainer! lol

Why are you asking us? Have you not asked Tesco yet?

Bear in mind the problem may not lie with Tesco but elsewhere in the system, eg with your bank. I've previously encountered failed attempts to pay by debit card, followed by a successful attempt, leaving an extra debit 'earmarked' on your bank account, though it 'drops off' after a couple of days.

Your getting way too excited about this.

The problem was that the call center person probably clicked twice as the system was going slow. Its a bit like on the internet when the page says "Dont click twice, payment takes 30 seconds". The reason you dont click twice is that it will take two payments!

The problem is that call center staff are under so much pressure to take 100 calls a day with 100% quality or some other crap! So mistakes like this happen all the time.

If you want to know why I know this I worked in NTL once. I saw the way callcenter staff are treated...... Its terrible and dont even start with the Indian centers:rolleyes:

Tesco have done the same to me. Fortunately it was not for as much as Peter was stung for but 2 x £1800 is a lot in my opinion. It is wrong to make mistakes with people's money, especially when it is a considerable amount.

I've phoned them 3 times since I discovered the error (Sun). They assured me the money would be returned within 2 working days. Well, 4 working days later and guess what? No money.

    It's not acceptable.
