Got some bad news, I've done a search for their original announcement. Finally found it and I'm afraid it says it doesn't cover Orange mobiles.

Hi Folks,

Tried calling the 0844 number from my O2 mobile this eveing and it wont connect due to the time of day i'm calling, so i guess it can only be used at the weekend to call different networks.

It was worth a shot though!

Thanks for coming back and letting us know.

Maybe you could find some friends on Vodafone - I think it'll connect to those numbers on weekday evenings.

I tried Vodafone and it worked no problem, so will use it to call Vodafone Evening and Weekends and to call any other networks at Weekends

Pricefighter's and Martin's threads on the Telephones Home Phones Board regarding the AbroadTel 0844 access number for mobiles phones sound like they could be relevant here too.
