They can ask but it is very unlikely the company will provide this information.

Not necessarily. A great many employers do ask for sickness records. It depends on what is asked. Many employers routinely ask for the number of sickness absences; and many employers routinely provide that. What they cannot do is ask for reasons.

OP - your are clearly hoping to hide something. Nobody asks a question like that out of curiosity. If you explain the situation, you'll get better advice!

A friend is being bullied and is worried about going off sick with stress because they might not be able to get another job.
However she is having to take sleep medicines because the situation at work is unbearable so has to chose with going off work with stress and maybe not get another job or damage their health.
I am just grateful it is not me. Hopefully she will get another job ASAP.

Health is more important than job.

I agree but maybe short term pain is better to avoid long term unemployment.

Unfortunately, having no job (and thus no money coming in) can also be bad for your health.

    Ah, so the options are:

    1. Work and make yourself ill

    2. Not work and make yourself ill

    Quite depressing, don't you think?

    A high risk strategy.
