From EveryWhere: "But the thing that you should do now is to make the Toshiba Recovery DVDs as aforementioned, as that should have been done soon after you purchased the machine.
Not an issue, but you should do it now and put them aside for later"
I'll attempt that, thanks so much, and will keep all the helpful replies here for the future.
I am just so appreciative of the time and effort people on this forum take to help 'non technical people' like me. I won't lose this thread as it has such great help.
My Dell refurbished should arrive next week. I have a funeral to attend and a few days away then I'll begin - starting at first with the Dell!
Thank you all again.

You will be extremely happy with your purchase ..
Just don't ruin it by putting Norton or any other garbage on it
How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking ??0 -

Thanks AndyPix. I don't mind you asking - I paid £295. I'm going to be extra careful about what I put on this one.
Although technology advances very quickly I hope to make this one last a long time - improving my limited technical skills as I go. Later, when I have time, motivation and can get to grips with things, I, using the helpful information given in this forum, may try by experimenting on my present Toshiba laptop.
My track record in the technical area is poor - very poor - and my learning continues at a snail's pace - better than not trying at all. (I had over 40 lessons, and other help, before I eventually managed to pass my driving test - some years ago.)
Thanks again.

Don't expect to upgrade the Toshiba on your own. Better to begin a new thread when you are ready, so that we can guide you through the process.
Have you sorted the Toshiba Recovery media yet? Don't procrastinate.
The best way to get things done is just to get on with it. It doesn't matter if it takes a few tries. It's the end result that will be satisfying and the added confidence that it imparts to you. So don't just kick the can down the road. Plan to get the job done.
It doesn't matter how long it takes you, but at least get started.
Order an SSD. https://www.mymemory.co.uk/integral-120gb-p-series-5-sata-iii-2-5-ssd-drive-560mb-s.html
Then at least it's there and ready. Once completed, you can put the machine up for sale or pass it on to family, as it will be devoid of any of your data.
But you'll probably like it a lot more at that point.0 -
Thanks for such good advice, EveryWhere. Will definitely make a start and post with update.
Retired at 55 - Update at 12.20 pm - Have just finished Creating the set of system recovery media DVD's (Three of them) - with the help of the YouTube link, thanks.
Will send for the SSD next week as I'm going to be away for a few days. In the meantime I have been working on the 'new' Dell laptop, installing printer and installing the safety features recommended - AVG free and Malwarebytes etc.
Thunderbird also installed for email - so pleased to have done than too. This is definitely confidence boosting and I'm very pleased to have benefited from the great information and advice here.
Thank you again.

Hello EveryWhere - and thank you again to all who have helped me.
I am posting here from my 'new' refurbished Dell Latitude E7450 and it is going well.
So far the only thing I miss is the CD facility.
I would like to go ahead and order the SSD you recommend, EveryWhere then, as advised, start a new thread asking for guidance to try to install it - having successfully created the Recovery DVDs - with the help received on this forum.
Before I do this would you please good enough to check this for me, if possible?
Following the link you gave and, just before ordering, "... Does laptop have a 2.5 inch enclosure, and can take an SSD?"

I'm sure it must be OK as the link is the one you helpfully provided -https://www.mymemory.co.uk/integral-120gb-p-series-5-sata-iii-2-5-ssd-drive-560mb-s.html .

If you would be able to confirm (My Toshiba Laptop: Model L830-16W and Part Number PSKF2E-01U00FEN) I'll go ahead and order today from My Memory, thank you.

It may be a wee while before I can manage to (with help) attempt the task but, having the SSD will give me the incentive - not to give up, thanks.

Thank you very much. Have just ordered, using your link, and should be with me in a few days - by Royal Mail.
I'll keep it safely until (hopefully with much appreciated help from this Forum) I can attempt to fit it. As suggested - I'll start a new post at that time.
Thank you again.

Don't buy refurbished products. I know companies also give warranty on refurbished but they have used products.0
