After the appalling service the last few days, could the management at least inform people how long downtime is likely to last? Glib statements like
"MoneySavingExpert.com has been attacked. We're fighting back, but it may mean slowness & glitches." are almost worthless.

Are users details safe? or have they been compromised?
Should I expect lots of spam to the address I used to sign up to the money tips?
What are you doing to stop this happening again?
What are the recommended actions for users concerned about their accounts and potential identity theft?

The type of attack as far as my limited experiance goes your details would be. and to be fair to the site owners they probably no idea them selves when the site would be backup them selves. and in regards to ID theft how could anyone get personal details from yourself without you first posting them in the first place
  • mrg9999... sure MSE team really appreciate your rant after all the work they have been involved in getting this site up and running... you could always go elsewhere if you feel so strongly about the "appalling service" !!

i think domestic users will find if they have the correct PC security in place, then little harm should come to them.
you are more likely to be scammed at the petrol station or the restaurant.
also take care on ebay, and dont click on any funny emails.

as far as i know, Martin hasnt got my CC number.:)

A DDOS is a site owners worst nightmare

There are 3 types of DDOS

Bandwidth attacks designed to overflow and consume resources available to the victim (i.e., network bandwidth and equipment throughput)

Protocol Attacks take advantage of protocol inherent design (i.e., SMURF and DNS)

Software Vulnerability Attacks attempt to exploit a software program design flaw (i.e., Land attack, Ping of Death, and Fragmentation

The most likely, and I am speculating because I'm not at server end, is the first in which case you are unlikely to be affected, other than having to persevere with a slow site.

I have seen DDOS force sites to close permanently, I think Martin's team have done a pretty good job even getting back within 3 days.

As for telling you what he is doing to prevent it again. Would you tell a burglar where you keep your key?

There's an audio episode of Security Now about DDos here.

it's nothing like that kind of attack. It's more about flooding the bandwidth between you and a site so you can't get through. the actual site itself isn't compromised.

Think of it like if you had a business dependant on telephone calls and someone put up your number somewhere and managed to get you flooded with hundreds of crank calls so real business couldn't get through.
(not exact accurate but maybe a good way of a non-techie to think of it).

I think there should be a 'rebuke' button in addition to the 'thanks' one

You can't call it appalling service. The site was hacked! In IT it is impossible sometimes to predict how long it will take to fix a problem.
