So the comparison sites do not take into account daily standard charge?

PCWs do take into account standing charges. All tariffs compromise of a standing charge and price per kWh. Suppliers are though permitted to set a standing charge of zero. If you use a PCW such as MSE cheap Energy Club, it will also take into account any shared referral fees (cash back) in the total cost calculation.

The two key elements to an accurate cost projection are postcode and annual usage in kWhs/year. the latter is difficult to determine when moving into a new property. Use Ofgem's standard usage figures and choose a fixed tariff such as Octopus ( with no exit fees) and you have a get out of jail free card if you got your projected consumption figure wrong.

Thanks. That was very helpful. I'm going to do what you say and switch after fixed price deal ends.

Also, be aware that some companies, like Octopus & Bulb, have referral schemes. If you use a referral code you can get £50 credited to your account to start you off with a good credit balance.

Quite often, that's worth more than the cashback you get from PCW's

It is worth checking out the "Referrals" board on this forum for referral codes.
