Abbey would not decrease my credit limit.

I have activated my new Abbey/Santander credit card and I wanted a lower credit limit as I don't need £11000+ of credit limit. I was told that they couldn't increase or decrease my credit limit, and I was told it might be a new Abbey rule.
And they confirmed that the high credit limit was probably to match my other Abbey/Mbna credit card (which is 11000+too).
Has anyone heard of that new rule before? I would have thought there wouldn't be any problems decreasing a credit limit.
It's the first time (ever)as well that I was asked to give the 3 security number at the back of my card, that was when I was passed from the credit card customer services to another department to ask for the security codes etc... to get my account online, that got me suspicious but it was probably my paranoia..........was it?

  • that sounds a bit strange alrite, a company cant force you to keep a higher limit if you dont want it- i can understand rule about not being able to increase, but not decreasing it! the 3 digit number is ok- alot of companies use that for secuirty. phone back about your limit though- say your concerned about fraud etc and the your trying to be finanically savy an thats why you want to reduce limit!

That's what I have been telling them, it was for security reasons, but they started to tell me about how to take care of my card and pin number, (which I know) and if I do that I would be allright.
I kept insisting and asking why, but they just repeated we can't do it, and mention the new Abbey rule. Why would they insist on people sticking to what they've got? Is there a glitch again with the system that they can't physically change the credit limit once it is inputed?
  • highly strange, try calling them back- as far as im aware there would be nothing in your t and c's to state that you cant reduce your limit! in fact, it sounds ludicrious! ( forgive my spelling!)

call back and ask for the clause in your t and c 's which states you cant reduce your limit!

  • If you are not happy with what Abbey told you - take your business to a card issuer that will.
  • Just say you don't want that much credit available against your credit report as it looks bad, if they refuse then tell them to close the account. They should respond with.... i'll just speak to my manager and within 5 minutes it will all be fixed :)
  • any joy spark?

I called Abbey again and ask again to have my credit limit lowered, as it's showing too much credit on my credit report.
She said the same thing. At the moment Abbey do not offer that option (of lowering or increase the credit limit). So I've explained that if they are not capable to reduce my credit limit on that card I will have to close one account, and ask to close my Abbey/Mbna account(it's the same credit limit but it has a higher Apr, and I have another card with Mbna anyway).
So she said that she could not close my account as it was a Mbna card, and she transferred me to the Mbna number. I have waited 45 minutes for someone to answer, while listening to that voice telling me over and over again that they were busy at the moment and they will transfer me to one of their specialists as soon as possible, then I was cut off.
    So I'll try again tomorow.
Can someone give me the exact MBNA phone number to cancel my card as I was passed through from Abbey and don't know the exact phone number.
Do they ask you to send a written demand or will they close my account on the phone?

No promises, but the MBNA customer closures/retentions* department number I use for my Virgin card is 0800 783 1116.

    * What will you say if they offer you a fee-free transfer of £10K+ to your current account for 6 months (and ask for only £5 a month in return)? Will you turn down a £250 'gift'? ;)

Thanks, I'll try them tomorrow. The last call was a total waste of time. I hope I won't have an exorbitant phone bill................
