Corned beef.

  • Many many years ago I worked in a supermarket, the corned beef came in huge tins and had to be sliced for the deli counter. The number of quite serious injuries from the open edge of the corned beef tins was legendary, almost every one of the deli staff bore a scar.

If you use a tin-opener on the straight edges and get as far into the corner as you can, you should be able to lever it open, but it's risky, you have been warned! Alternatively the old-fashioned 'camping' type of tin opener, where you dig it in to start might do it. I usually buy ready-sliced because I can't manage the key.

I open corned beef with the electric can opener. It does go round the rounded corners.

I recall Sainsburys used to do normal & economy corned beef. I always preferred the taste of the economy version, strangely enough.

We always use the Sainsbury's 'Basics' corned beef (in the white and orange wrapper) and prefer the taste too.

Another thumbs-up here for the Sainsbobs Basics corned beef. We used to buy branded until it got too expensive so switched down to S's "normal" and then switched down again to the Basics. Win-win all round as it tastes just the same and is much cheaper. :)

We usually have piccalilli on our cb sandwiches but like beetroot/raw onion/stliced omatoes/onion chutney too - oh, the decisions! :D

Corned beef and Branston pickle sandwiches are one of my favourite things, served with a bag of cheese and onion crisps. I have very sophisticated tastes :D

Just be careful with corned beef, a lot uses beef reared in Brazil on areas of destroyed rainforest. I!!!8217;m sure none on here would wish to pay a company to destroy amazonian rainforest.
  • For those who hate the keys, you can open both ends of any tin with a normal midrange (ie, not the old fashioned metal ones with a bottleopener handle) can opener. Then push the filling out in one go. Oh, and open the narrow end first, just in case the filling decides to make a move whilst you're dealing with the other end.

And everybody needs to keep the unopened tins in the fridge - that way, it slides out easily.

FWIW, I can't tell the difference between the cheap and not so cheap tins. They all taste the same once covered in pickle and salad or, apparently, smushed up with mashed potato.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

And cuts more easily too, although I do use a very sharp knife.
  • Lol pollycat my mum was telling me the exact same thing the other day. I hate the tins. My mum opened one for me the other day so I wouldn't hurt myself!! I'm in my 30's but I'm sure she still thinks I'm 5!!

I usually buy whatever's cheapest for hash, never seen the basics in our Sainsburys sadly.
If I land on a fattier tin, where there's a bit more fat around the edges, I scrape that off and use it to fry my onions!
