Kiev flights cancelled

Hi there -I’m new to this site & looking for advice please.
Son and husband were booked to go to Kiev for Champions League final flying out from Liverpool on 26th May returning next day. Flights were £950 return each. They both had match tickets. They were told by text on afternoon of Thursday 24th that flight was cancelled & no alternative. They went on standby to Liverpool JLA on Friday evening but were not successful for either of the 2 flights.
The flights were booked through World Choice Sports Travel based in Widnes and I have all the details-eticket numbers and times.
We feel strongly that all those whose flights were cancelled were treated really badly and compensation should be due but unsure who is at fault? I’ve contacted World Choice who informed the airline was Ethiopian Airways. I explained the obvious level of disappointment, which was understood, but lady suggested to send a letter to them which would be forwarded to Ethiopian? She said this was because Ethiopian wouldn’t know any details as World Choice booked so many seats.
As well as huge disappointment, there was time off work, stress and a lot of inconvenience.
Please can anyone advise on this, point us in the right direction? Is it worth writing to Ethiopian -obviously not EU based? Is it felt that writing to World Choice is a wasted effort? However, this sort of thing just shouldn’t happen. I’d appreciate some thoughts
Many thanks

In addition to the answers there, I can only suggest that you contact the CAA who may be able to see through the smoke and mirrors and offer some guidance.

Good luck. Please read Vaubans superb guide. To find it Google and then download 'vaubans guide'.0
