Dont put too much trust on the tenants attitude to a stranger. When we found our first house the neighbours (tennants in a terrace)seemed a pleasant elderly couple but when we were actually living there, they were awful, they rudely commented on everything we did in the garden (which was overgrown as last owner had been an old lady who couldnt manage it),work in the house (we put up some shelves, they said we were going to drill through the wall!) they complained I was cruel because we had a budgie (he was free to fly all day with the cage open) and commented that it wasnt fair to have kids there when I was expecting my first one.We found out they had made complaints about a previous occupant not letting their children play in the garden .
When we moved we sold to a middle aged couple and told them the people next door didnt like kids (which was true). I believe most of the problem was that we were young (both 23) when we bought and they were jealous.

Do I really have to explain to you?

250k (well a little less) for a 3 bed semi 1930s house? What can you get up the road for that?? dont answer I already know

3 bed semi in Hampshire for £180k http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-4241444.rsp

    Another for £170k http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-6161381.rsp

    Another for £150k http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-6333134.rsp

May be crap parts of Hampshire, never been to the place!
  • Not sure if the issue is with people who are tennants or just people who may not be very nice anyway. Have owned houses in the past and had some nice neighbours and some not nice, it's luck of the draw!

We rent, because husband works various places, the price of this is £1,500 per month so we are not yobs etc, but I generally dont let people know we are tennants because of peoples attitudes.

What you two on about ?

Englands being ruled by the scots !

Tony Bliar was born in Scotland... and perhaps youve not noticed the scottish accent on Gorden da Bruce Brown ?

We will have our freedom !!!!

With regards the property, I think it is probably best to bite the bullet and on your next viewing knock on the neighbours door and introduce yourself as a prospective neighbour.

.DSS doesnt automatically make them yobs and private renting doesnt automatically mean they have been refused from housing assoc/council.But i do agree with the idea of going there a few times during the day and evening to see what the area appears to be like, regards Elaine

I sincerely did not mean that if they were DSS they were yobs and I apologise if anyone thinks that is what I meant.

I simply would like to know if they were for example "care in the community" cases or worse.

Lol Ginge, I think you should stop digging now. :D

When my eldest finally strikes out on his own, he will come under the 'care in the community' banner because of his disabilities. You may be stereotyping bigstyle here.

I know what you mean though and if it were me, I would knock on all nearby doors for a friendly chat as well as visiting the local shop or pub which may be a mine of information.

Good luck, hope it all turns out as you wish.

 why should anyone even *have* access to whether another comes under the "care in the community" banner?

To be fair, I think you're asking for the impossible, mainly because if such information were collated and existed then made public for potential buyers to view there would be an uproar!!!

Long live the Data Protection Act! ;)

I do wish you well in your decision.
