I am 58 years old with 19 years driving experience. I own an Audi A4 B7 Sline 2.0 TDI 2005 saloon with 180000 miles and the insurance group is 27e annual insurance £300. I want to downsize to a 2012 Kia Rio 1.25 78000 miles, petrol with insurance group 5e and the insurance quotes I am getting is around £295? I have 10 years no claim bonus and three penalty points with £100 fine issued Jan 2017. The police officer said it would not affect my premiums? How can the insurance quotes be the same? tried the comparison sites and moneysupermarket quoted me £700 for a Kia Rio?

    You're going from a car worth £500 to a car worth £4k+.

    It's a newer car.

Generally the older a car is, the cheaper the Insurance is as it's cheaper for the Insurers to replace

Its a KIA, I got quotes on one and it was more than quotes for similar sized Ford's and Vauxall's.

Use the insurance company the policeman works for, sounds like they maybe cheaper.

As far as I can see, if you get to a certain age without causing any horrible accidents, then the insurers don't really care what you drive any more.

I swapped a Maxda MX-5 for a Fiat Panda. You might expect that replacing a sports car with a little city car would lower the premiums. It didn't.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Go back to the policeman, he has mis-sold you advice on car insurance.

A single 3pt FPN SP30 is very unlikely to make any significant difference to a premium.

After a certain age and good driving history, it seems they don't care what you drive, you're as likely (or not) to crash it...

  • Not really a surprise, the newer car will be worth more and therefore cost the insurer more to replace.

In my experience from driving a 2002 Nissan Almera, there comes a point where the premiums stop going down and start going up again. Probably because they are worried a piece of the vehicle will fly off and hit someone.
