Purchased 2nd hand car from Arnold Clark, needs new brake pads straight away.

Brake pads should not be worn out at 13K so the car needs looking at.0

Is that something perculiar to Mini's?
I've rarely had to replace rear pads and would expect 50k out of set easily unless I had a dragging caliper.
Rear brakes do relatively little compared to fronts (And fronts should last more than 10k).0 -
On what basis do you make that assumption - I bought my Mini at 30k miles and it was already on 3rd set of rear pads
Rears on my Mondeo have done 78,000 miles since I changed them at 55,000 miles and have 3mm left.
If any car I'd ever had in the 30 years I've been driving had gone through rear brakes that fast I'd be wondering what was wrong. What did the previous owner do, spend all weekend handbrake turning it around the local McDonalds car park to impress the girls?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. If its the current generation F series then pads & discs are thin to begin with cruise control/traction control brakes the rear wheels increasing wear
Its not unusual for them to require replacement at 20k0 -

Don't know about the Mini other than their use for traction/stability control but on my last Jag XF the rear brakes were much smaller pads/discs and were set to apply a split second before the fronts apparently to aid braking stability.
Having been brought up on fast bikes this was alien to me but I've no reason to disbelieve0 -
I've left it with their head office to decide what to do. Hopefully they get back to me by tomorrow. If I;m going through rear brakes every 13k then I'll get a rewind tool and start doing them myself.
Did a bit a research and yes the cruise control uses the rear brakes to control the speed so I'm guessing the 1st owner may have used that (A LOT)0 -

I would buy a tool anyway and do the pads yourself. Rear pads are £25 to £60 depending on the make.
I fitted a set of EBC Red stuff rear pads to my dads Jaguar XF as they tended to last 25K - he is on his 2nd set now and last a lot longer than 40K per set and no issues at all. Less brake dust too !0
