Can I request a chargeback?

Options
Hi all,

I am looking for your expert advice. My partner and I were in Manchester this weekend to se Billy Joel play. We stayed in the Hilton in Deansgate and finished off our night with a drink in their bar. However I believe we have been overcharged.

I was never presented with an itemised bill but I believe this to be the case by reading the menu. I have also accounted for the service charge levy. I paid and had to ask for a credit card receipt so at least I have that.

I have emailed Hilton and they are looking into it. I am wondering if I can request a chargeback with Amex in case Hilton refuse??

Thanks in advance.

Think it would be a hard fight, You handed over your card and agreed to pay a bill you never even looked at

It was contactless payment so I haven't authorised it. But I take your point that it would be hard to fight. I can't believe a hilton wouldn't give you a itemised receipt though!

Using contactless doesn't mean you haven't authorised the payment, it just means you didn't do so via the PIN!

Contactless payments aren't authorised by you or the bank. Anyone could go around tapping your card. Thats why there's a limit to the amount of any charge as well as the amount of contactless transactions can be done consecutively.

But back to the original question, can Amex amend the charge?

Drinks in Hotel bars are generally more expensive than the High Street. As it's contactless, it's presumably less than £30.

    What did you order?

We only had a night cap so one drink each. The cost was 29.70£ but from my calculations it should have been less.
I realise this is a small amount but I hate being ripped off especially by large corporations.

It's true that some contactless payments don't receive authorisation (in the technical sense of an online automated check that you have funds available, etc) from the bank, but in the more general sense of the word, if you use your card to pay contactlessly then you have authorised the transaction, i.e. you've given the merchant authority to deduct the cost from your account. Obviously if you've reported it stolen then any subsequent transactions would be regarded as unauthorised but that presumably doesn't apply here....

I don't believe so, no, because, at the risk of labouring the point, as far as Amex (and the merchant) are concerned, you did authorise the transaction!

I was charged the wrong amount! Surely I can request a cash back!

The amount you are to be charged is on the terminal before you give them the card. Why did you agree to it?

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
