Apart from the one time I've always used pet sitters where my dog would go and stay in their home.

I've used independent people and agencies, the indys were fine, but my sitter died just before my holiday leaving me to find another one. After that I used and agency, if the sitter has a problem they will find another for you, worth the few extra pounds.

We (my dog and I) always met the people he was going to at their home first to make sure everyone was happy, he really enjoyed his holidays and was made such a fuss of, he came home a totally different dog from the traumatised one he was after being in kennels.

Our local vets always have adverts on their noticeboard.

Found this on tinterweb, which pretty much gives me the answer. Thanks for your input.

"If you have pet insurance then you will often be covered for part or all of the cost of cancelling or cutting short your holiday. But some insurance firms also offer pet cancellation cover under their travel policies.
What is covered varies from the return of pre-booked kennel and cattery fees to a full refund of the cost of a holiday that has to be cancelled owing to a pet's illness.
According to research group Defaqto, six firms offer some level of pet cover on their travel policies - AA, Direct Line, Direct Travel, MRL Insurance Direct, Tesco Tailored Travel and Virgin Money. If it is an important add-on for you, read the small print before you buy.
Direct Line and MRL Insurance-cover only cats and dogs, Tesco and Virgin extend this to leisure horses, while Direct Travel and AA cover any pet."
