Nail in tyre - new tyre or repair?

Not seen these - any links? As an ex-tyre fitter, I'd be wary of anything that doesn't involve taking the tyre off the rim to inspect inside.
They're all over EBay. Tend to come with big warnings of "not for highway use" because they're intended for plugging tyres on cross country stuff to keep you moving.
The legality is questionable - there's no outright ban on them in UK law, but all repairs must be to an "acceptable" standard, which is usually taken to mean the relevant British Standard. Certainly, if you had an accident caused by a tyre with one of these in failing I wouldn't fancy your chances in court.
It's not so much the repair itself, they seal and they don't come out. As you suggest, it's the impossibility of inspecting for carcass damage when the tyre's on the rim.
For the cost of a "proper" repair it really isn't worth it - and that's from someone who happily drives on Chinese tyres and keeps them to under 2mm tread.0 -

I am told some garages use these now, they look perfectly ok to me.0 -
I've had plenty of those type of punctures repaired. Last one was over 2 years ago. Tyre has now done 20,000 miles since the repair and no issues.0

With my previous car (Golf GT Tdi) I got a puncture 2 weeks after getting it (new). I used one of those Tar String repair kits .. the repaired tyre last 44k miles. (I rotated the wheels after about 18k miles which meant I replaced all 4 tyres at 44k). The repaired tyre never lost any pressure at all.0

I repaired a tyre with one of those sticky string kits; leaked after a few months so I double-plugged the hole and it lasted the life of the tyre which was nearly new when the puncture occured. The beauty is you can repair in situ so don't need to get a rebalance. Tip. I used the vulcanising cement from a £1 Poundland puncture repair kit around the plugs.0

I had a nail in my tyre a couple of weeks back. In the centre of the tread.
TPMS alerted me. As the trye wasnt flat I took it to my local tyre shop who plugged/repaired it and rebalanced the tyre in less than 30 mins: £20.50 IIRC.0 -
I just took it to National Tyres who were rated fairly well (Much higher than kwik-fit etc..
They told me I had to replace the tyre as he thought the nail might be causing 2 holes and not just the one.
But then i'm wondering if I've been ripped off for a new tyre...
Should I complain?0
