Why is your energy company pressuring you to have a smart meter installed - to the extent of wrongly telling you that you MUST have one installed?

    - because they get fined if they don't meet their target for the number of meters installed.

You can't fine them for customers making an informed decision not to have them installed yet. That doesn't make sense. EDF phoned me a few times recently but I refused as they are not compulsory and have no benefit for me. I can read my meter myself and the current generation of smart meters is useless as a smart meter once you change supplier, why would I want one. They can't fine EDF for not reaching a target then.

Think its a ridiculous fine, only 3 weeks behind target and this will only result in energy companies trying to force them on people who don't want them or benefit from them. Plus pushing prices up for consumers to losses in profits due to fines. The smart Meter role out needs to be stopped until its fit for purpose.

Got mine fitted by EDF over a year ago and despite only being less than 3m apart the gas meter Cant talk to the electric so I have to so manual reads of my gas meter, yet 2 other family members have Scottish gas and their meters are over 10m apart and work great, so even if they met their target how many work as designed?

This is shocking and no doubt the cost of the fine will be paid for by customers. There is nothing smart about smart meters, they are simply a convenience to save reading meters and a very expensive one which consumers are being compelled to pay with no choice.
I refuse to get a smart meter until they are actually providing something more than ability to phone home, nothing EDF or any other company said is going t change this and I suspect millions are like me in this respect. Why on earth should an energy company be penalised for not meeting a target for an optional change to meet a stupid misguided green target which does absolutely nothing to reduce energy consumption. For £400 the energy companies could have replaced a house lights with LED bulbs and fittings where necessary and actually reduced energy consumption - surely this would be better than putting in a dumb meter which might phone home

If smart meters are optional - not compulsory - then how can the Government roll them out to every household by 2020 ?
What happens to all the meter readers if we all had smart meters? Unemployed ! how many jobs is that?

Ugh, Why are they pushing people to install outdated smart meters? It makes sense to wait till the second generation meters are ready for wider roll-out

They are not fining EDF they are fining EDF's customers. Don't tell me that they are going to pay this out of their profits & reduce their shareholder's dividends because we all know that is not going to happen.

The non-SMART meter installation is becoming more of a fiasco every day.

No wonder energy prices are going up. It won't stop with EDF, will it?
