Buying a car as a learner driver

Hi, so I had my first driving lesson today (well technically yesterday) and I am looking to either have a two hour lesson every week or two two hour lessons.

For me I really feel that I am a hands on learner and I want something to do in between my driving lessons to make driving feel more natural and subconscious to me.

Is it worth buying a car now ( as a learner) and taking it out maybe say every couple of days with a parent or other qualified person (struggling to think of others as most people I know are not 25 or older) to just do short routes and go over what I've learned in the lessons?

I feel like actually having my car sat there outside will be a huge incentive to do my best and pass quickly so I can drive it by myself

Or spend the money on more lessons? The cost of the car and insurance will buy a lot of lessons.

I think you should check insurance costs.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I bought my daughter a car and took her out to practice in between lessons, insurance is cheaper as a learner and by the time she passed she already had 1 years no claims bonus going forward.

There have been threads where insurers had issues with no claims dated before they passed their test. May limit the insurers on offer after passing.

So after one driving lesson you want to buy a car? Just wait, you're likely to have 50 years of driving ahead of you so a few months is nothing.
  • But you should be getting as much practice in between driving lessons. Can you not use a parents car?

These days that is often prohibitively expensive, unfortunately...it certainly was for our older 2 years ago, and looking similar for the younger now :(

I'd pass your test first, but perhaps if you could use your parents car, that's a good way of getting extra practice in.

The other thing I've heard about going out with someone who is not an instructor is they may not pick you up on bad habits.
Instead of having 1 or 2 2 hour lessons a week why not have 2 or 4 1 hour lessons that way you could be having a lesson every other day.

I found two hour lessons much better that one hour lessons.
