Can anyone claim ESA for 13 weeks?

As title suggests, can anyone claim ESA for 13 weeks in the assessment phase before they look into the claim?
Is there any criteria to claim for those 13 weeks?
thanks

So nothing more than a fit note?
Not paid enough NI contributions (I think) in last 2 years though they have been protected because until youngest got to 12. Partner earns too much for the other version (can't remember what it's called)
So even if I get knocked back at 13 weeks, the fit note will get me on it?

No, you have to qualify for either conts (you say you dont) or income based (you say you dont)

That won't count for Contribution based benefits.

Anybody who has a 'fit note' can put in a claim for ESA but as marliepanda says you have to fulfil other qualifying criteria before you will qualify to receive any payment.

    Basic requirements for PIP.

You must be aged 16 to 64 and have a health condition or disability where you:
    • have had difficulties with daily living or getting around (or both) for 3 months
    • expect these difficulties to continue for at least 9 months (unless you!!!8217;re terminally ill with less than 6 months to live)
You must have lived in England, Scotland or Wales for at least 2 of the last 3 years, and be in one of these countries when you apply.

Claiming sickness benefits isn't intended to be an easy way to get money if all you want to do is avoid working.

I'd class query Multiple Sclerosis (MRI next week), "ladies problems" that looks like requiring radical surgery, severe IBS, and severe vertigo as a bit more than just claiming to try and avoid working..........

Please bear in mind that PIP isn't awarded based on a diagnosis, it's how those conditions affect you daily. This maybe a good place to start, its only a guide to what you could possibly score though. Relevant evidence will be needed.

I would agree, but a thread where it looks like somebody is trying to claim benefit without providing medical evidence i.e. a fit note, looks suspicious to say the least. I can't see a doctor refusing to provide a fit note to enable ESA to be claimed with that list of illnesses.
