    Yep, this actually seems to be the most probable scenario.

    Though I would suggest that OP has a look on other forums to see if anyone has encountered similar issues. There is a small possibility that a design fault exists, but they'll mass produce those stands and it will most likely be something which affects a large number of people or nobody!

    Very likely that this was simply installed improperly/incorrectly. Maybe the screws weren't tight enough? Either way, this is going to be a potential uphill battle to get anything back.

    A home contents insurance policy claim is probably the best way forward - depending on what policy he has and what it covers. (You're looking at needing accidental damage cover).
