Dare I venture into this? downloading a film.

Options
I seem to be on a learning curve of late, and now for something else.

When we fly, it seems that everyone on the aircraft is watching a movie from either phone, tablet or laptop.

Yes, the word download comes to mind, but I do not have a clue how this is done. Dare anyone venture on explaining this please, in simple terms.

Those other passengers may not be "downloading" but merely watching a streamed service, ie, Amazon, Netflix, Google Movies etc, or even the airline's own in-flight service.

    Brain.....Mouth......

I have googled, discovered on my phone, the facility to via googleplay, go to movies, type in free movies (or tv shows) click and off you go.

If I had engaged my brain before opening my mouth etc.

So I am now going to look round, it may be that to watch anything of substance, I may have to shell out. So this leads me to two questions. Presumably my phone has to be on flight mode, so any choosing of film, has to be done prior to flight. I see the word library, have I to somehow select a film then save it to library and is it easy to do that?.

If I do choose to pay for a film, how is that done, ?, and if I do, do I get to keep the film to re-watch or is it a once only viewing?.

Oh, you might regret answering, ha ha, because ideally I'd like to know how each of these operate please.

Free & legal Go to BBC iplayer, c4 onDemand etc click the download button.

    Not free but legal:

1.Buy a film from the likes of amazon or google play and click the download button

    2. Subscribe to Netflix, amazon prime etc and click the download button (theres a theme developing)

3 buy a DVD and stick it in your laptop or "rip" it to your computer/tablets memory

Well dodgy: go to a shady internet site, click the download button and take your (financial) life in your hands

Lets take the first suggestion first. If I go to iplayer on my laptop and download, can this be "sent" to phone, or if I have iplayer on my phone, it will sync. If its yes so far, am I able to store the film for later use?.

(we are due to go out soon, but will resume this later this morning)

IT downloads to the device , not both devices . Nothing to stop you downloading different stuff to each device.

If you have sky go then you can also download on that

But as mentioned, as well as streaming, there is content, included movie purchases, that you can legally download to watch them offline on your device.

If I do choose to pay for a film, how is that done, ?, and if I do, do I get to keep the film to re-watch or is it a once only viewing?.
Just to be clear, you can have your device in airplane mode and have wifi enabled. Airplane mode by default will switch off all the network/telecoms and wifi off, you then have to manually switch wifi back on and connect to whatever wifi service is provided.

unless yopu have a phone with a good memory it will soon fill up.

However if it takes a SD card you can use that.

Note BBC iPlayer will download to the internal memory of the phone only

I wouldnt bother with in flight wifi ..
Not many flights provide it, and it is expensive, especially if you wanty to start streaming ..

As above, simply install any of the following apps

    Iplayer
    4OD
    ITV player
    Netflix
    Sky go
    (more probly)

And you have the option to download a film to the device to watch when you are offline.

If you go down the route of downloading from less than legal sites on your PC, then you will have to use something like ES file explorer to get it to your phone over the network, or transfer it to an SD card, or use a USB OTG thingy
