You appear to have misunderstood, my posts.
OPs post is unclear to me =I am the purchaser and have hold of the V750 and they are assigned to his car.
IF AND ONLY IF the V750 has NOT been used, she can use the form to assign the registration number to whatever vehicle she chooses. It matters not a jot that her ex-boyfriend is named as nominee. As stated on the V570, the purchaser may change the nominee for £25 fee.The V750 Certificate of Entitlement is a pink A4 size piece of paper. It is used by the DVLA for the first issue of a personalised registration. If you have a V750 then the vehicle registration number shown on the document has never before been displayed on a vehicle. It is a brand new registration."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

OPs post is unclear to me = Those two statements contradict each other.

That makes even less sense.
This isn't inspector gadget. The V750 does not spontaneously combust as soon as you assign the plates to a car.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

No, but it does lose all validity, since it's superceded by the V5C for the car in question.
Yes which is what I was explaining in my initial post that missile responded to - that the references are single use only and become invalid after that use.
However missile seems to think there is some confusion around whether the plates were actually assigned to the boyfriends vehicle because the OP said they still had the v750 (which is why I said it doesn't spontaneously combust upon use). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
If the plate is assigned to a vehicle it then belongs to that vehicle and whoever owns it. From the V317 :If you want to add a nominee please give their details below. They will not have any rights to the vehicle registration number until you put it onto a vehicle registered in their name. You will lose all rights to this registration number at that point0

I will leave this post now as I have no wish to exchange insults with a key board warrior"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I'm with missile - it is not totally clear whether the OP's phrase "assigned to his car" means a) the ex is the nominee on the form and she has therefore assigned the number to him or b) the form has been actioned and the number actually has been linked to a vehicle. In the same way that the Registered Keeper is not necessarily the legal owner - is the question "Do I (casewilliams) retain the rights over the number as I am the purchaser of that right?" (Before the pedants start - yes, no-one owns the number apart from DVLA, you only buy the right to use/display that number under given circumstances).
Wonder if the OP will actually come back and specify....I need to think of something new here...0 -

Ignoring that the OP asked if they could sell the plates when they have been assigned to the ex's car, theres also this post:casewilliams wrote: »He is currently a nominee on the V750.
If i was to change the nominee to someone else, would he have to remove the plates?
I don't see the confusion you two do. Not even remotely. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
"If they have been assigned to his car" might be hypothetical - it is not "Now that they have been assigned to his car" or "Now that the physical plate has been put on the car"
And the answer has been provided by molerat - once they are actually assigned to the car, the right to the number transfers to the nominee.I need to think of something new here...0
