Mrs LW. One of the things I'm looking forward to in my new house is having an open fireplace....I may put jn a log burner later but for the first winter I will be just using the open grate. I had already thought about paper logs, wood offcuts etc. In fact I shall be talking to all my builder/joiner chums and asking for wood off-cuts. They often dont know what to do with them.....

Recently I bought an old fashioned spin dryer. It's brilliant. Now I live alone I sometimes just hand wash some of my clothes and save the big washer for linens, towels and big loads.

The other thing I do to save on washing machine use is that my everyday undies - ie knickers....... are either black or white. I have about 30 pairs of each. That way I'm not using the machine for small quantities. I can save them up for one big wash.

And of course the spin speed of the old fashioned spin dryers is much higher than that of washing machines. I usually re-spin towels etc and get loads of extra water from them. It really reduces drying times.

Like the sound of the wonderbag. .

By now - I'm inclined to think that probably the only people thinking their "own" thoughts are geniuses like Stephen Hawkings, Leonardo da Vinci, etc. The rest of us probably don't have much hope of chucking out "other peoples" thoughts/emotions and ensuring that the only thoughts/emotions we have are Our Own:(

I didn't mean that you don't/can't have your own opinions/thoughts - in fact it is theses different influences, and their constant amendments/re-examinations that can lead to new ways of thinking. After all, even Stephen Hawkings and da Vinci would have had their own influences.

I am now meal planning for the next couple of months to see what I need. Not as difficult as it could be as I live alone and can please myself. The plan is just that - not set in stone by any means - but it does mean I can always feed myself if I am unwell, as well as if there are shortages. I didn't grow much veg. this year due to various circumstances so may take on Mardartha's (and other's) suggestion of tinned veg even if only for soup. I have seen that this month I seem to have spent more on groceries than usual, despite not feeling that I bought much differently to normal. Maybe a sign of prices rising already? Something I will need to keep an eye on.

This week Lidl have 500ml bottles of good quality cold pressed rapeseed oil for 99p, so I have stocked up on those.

By the way, I have been noticing empty shelves in my supermarket for the last year and can't decide whether it is just mismanagement in the supply chain of my particular store, or part of a scaling back.

I've noticed the same, dreaming, on a very regular basis, and at different times of day/week, and it's had me thinking for a while! There's also been a major reduction in lower priced versions/own brands/basics brands etc, actually not kept any more, not just out of stock. Before I began catching up with the OS threads on here, I'd actually begun very slowly stocking up on certain things, simply as a hedge against something being out stock when I need it, not from a doomsayer POV! In the autumn, I usually buy a couple of extra bits towards Christmas each time I shop (often biccies/wine/other luxuries) but now I'm using the same principle to increase my sadly depleted standard pantry items (RL has been rather wobbly of late, and I've been a bit wobbly, mentally speaking). Although I'm younger than some here, I had a financially poor upbringing, vaguely remember electricity going off, etc., and my mum was THE best at making a meal from her pantry for days on end when there was no money - her thriftiness and creativity in the kitchen are amongst the best skills she gifted to me.

    A xo

I thought empty spaces were when the supermarkets were playing hardball with their suppliers. The Tesco fraud story showed that they demand all sorts of rebates and fees for the privilege of having their stuff on the shelves. But yes, they have definitely stopped stocking lower margin products

But they will have to be careful how much they lean on their suppliers if they want to protect their supply chains. Can't find the link but there was a piece in one of the papers yesterday saying the supermarkets are beginning to ask their suppliers what THEY are doing to ensure supplies. Ie they are not stockpiling themselves but expecting the suppliers to. If they combine that with their usual hard nosed demands for rebates etc, that's when you could get a case of straws and camels' backs

Ive noticed my local Co-o* have reduced there bags of bbq coals/fire starter stuff a lot! So anyone that plans to use bbq for cooking in event of power cut, nows probably the time to stock up. Also someone mentioned using wood off cuts (from builders etc) for open fire indoors, make sure the wood hasnt been treated as it can let off toxic fumes x

    Hi,
Tesco have strengthened their position with their recent £4billion takeover of Booker who are the largest food wholesaler in the UK with 30% of their sales going to the catering sector.
Starting September, Tesco will open the first of their impending cut price stores to compete with Aldi and Lidl.
It makes me uneasy when a company becomes too big. As a consumer, I'd rather see more competition between the retailers.

considering that even now Tesco food is not as British and RedTractor (for what that's worth) as Lidl or Aldi, I'll be wary about their cutprice offering.

Having said that, they have just sent me several vouchers and the first week is for £6 off a £40 spend. Loo paper, toothpaste, dishwasher tabs etc here I come. And sugar. They are the only supermarket that sell granulated sugar made from cane sugar and I find it much better for preserving than beet sugar. And beet sugar stinks if you keep it in an airtight container

So who thinks brexit is not going to happen by the end of March 2019, a short eight months away?

    Me, for a start.

If you agree, just give me a "Thanks", and we'll have a little poll.
