    Gosh that's a real bargain MrsLW :o)

I started using mine again a couple of days ago and the little tails are showing already, although it's reminded me that smaller seeds generally work better in a plastic sprouter. Lentils, mung etc shed their skins and are prone to rotting if you don't pick them all out (fiddly) so a jar is better here as they float to the top of the rinsing water. That's assuming it's a plastic one, if you got a posh terracotta number for 50p I'm well jell!!
  • No such luck M'dear it's a plastic one but I still see it as treasure!

On a Facebook group there was mention of electricity. Why there would be any power cuts I don’t understand.
    However
One consequence would be that ATM’s will not function.
So having a little extra cash hidden away could be on some prepping lists.
I know that many would find this impossible however those that can should do so.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

:) Good point. But the electricity can and will go off or the store's internet link to the banking system can go down at any time.

Only a few weeks ago, my Liddly couldn't use its card readers for several hours due to an internet glitch, so was on cash only sales. Store had full power and was otherwise functional. They'd put a notice on the entrance door to say Cash Sales Only and about 90% of would-be shoppers were turning away at that point.

There was a cash machine about 1 minute walk away.

I shop with cash 99% of the time, big ticket things would go on the credit or debit card, but I'm talking things like a new fridge. Being cash only for shopping keeps my life simple and my bank statements uncluttered and easy to read.

In my area yesterday there was no water a workman broke a main flooded the street. In another part the eletric was off ( don't know why will find out today) which I discovered when i tried to phone a disabled friend and her phone wouldn't work. So I got a little trial of lack of both. I'll take no electric before no water any day as long as it's not too cold or dark. Can't blame brexit for either of these but just shows how prepared you have to be.

    :) Too right, grunnie.

The water main which serves my block has broken 4 times in the last 10 years, most recently last month. I've spoken to the civil engineers in the employ of the water company and they've explained that it is due to the main moving in the stony soil. And it will keep happening.

This main is over 6 feet underground, when it cracks, we get an instant spring-and-river and sometimes a major (but very localised) localised flood.

Utilities can and will go off due to routine maintenance, wear & tear or some numptie smacking a spade or a digger through them, it helps to be prepared.

  • If you're going to have cash as a carry over in case of electricity outages the suggesting on most prepping sites is to have coinage as well as notes because in not too long a time if the power outage is a long one change becomes scarce and IF shops are still open and have comestibles for sale the shopkeepers might not have enough change to hand out to customers.

I have a stack of 50p incase I need to use the bus service before 9.30am and currently collecting £1 for odds and ends and emergencies when the Lidl self service till won't take my notes. It's a problem I'm having and don't know whether there are more forgeries around or whether the machines are kaput. Either way, note cash is proving not too reliable for me at the moment.
  • I'm buying in enough tins of rhubarb, sliced apple and plums to see me through the colder weather to make crumbles with, they're usually in syrup so won't need sugar (at least not much) in the fruit part of them and a crumble is such a comforting thing to fill gaps if lunch/supper has been a bit sparse or light. To make them more nutritious add in a couple of spoons of porridge oats to the crumble mix to make it into a fruit crisp which is the wartime way of adding value to meals and using less fat and sugar. Pretty tasty too!

I have coin jars, too, that DH gently laughs at, but they're been invaluable many times when we've been a bit short of cash, or for dinner money, emergency milk buying at the shop etc. So I guess I have the last laugh! Currently a bit short at the moment, but will slowly re-stock over the next few weeks.

Mrs LW, my tinned fruit stocks have just about been used up, so early September will see me refilling the cupboards with those, along with other stuff that we've used over the summer - it's been so good to "shop" out of the pantry as I've had a lot of CBA days, and whipping up a meal from the pantry/freezer is so satisfying!

    A xo
