Surely a plot twist would be the sudden appearance of a new car factory? Or a new way to pass the Henry VIII rule?

My prediction is the ever unreliable Boris will just change his mind.

I You know if this were a Hollywood film it would be one of those they have to split into two parts and even then you'd be thinking 'enough of the plot twists, just get to the denoument!!'
Strange you should mention that. The regulars on the gardening thread are aware of my cancer, but maybe unaware of the surreal spin it put on my life. It started growing at the beginning of 2016, diagnosis & treatment started by May/June. Around that time Trump happened, Bexit happened, the trees thing happened here in Sheffield & Jared O' Mara became our local MP so my life just turned into a JG Ballard story. I really do think I'm only still here just to watch the chaos unfold, when it's all resolved I'll be surplus to requirements...

As for the Kelly kettle - I nearly got one last year but didn't think I could justify it (smoker, only used twice - but I do have a really good excuse) For tea - clearly most of you will have one or more empty 850g sevile orange tins - simply clean them out and use as a billy can for the brewing of tea. If you're careful and only half remove the lid, then all the better.

As for Ikea - my guess is back to school fever (35+ years after actually being relevant and that phrase still strikes fear in my heart)

Edited to add: Scout 800 (on special offer) on it's way over from wonderful County Mayo

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

"A" level results were out last week so the crowds in IKEA were probably parents kitting their kids out for uni.At least I hope so, I'm planning a trip in early September.

Worrying reports on the news this morning about farmers not being able to get workers to pick crops.
  • Ikea is ALWAYS manically crowded in the summer holidays, it ought to calm down and be less heaving when the small people are back in school and I always try to get there early in the morning round 10 when they open to avoid the crowded lunchtime period when people go to eat at the restaurant. Though the crowds may have been exacerbated by the 'shortages after Brexit' item that was a couple of days ago in the media storm.

I don't know about get behind me Mrs LW but I will throw into the debate a magnificent little bit of kit that I rate highly and that is a tiny portable woodstove that you can cook on or use as a heater that also runs on twigs and general wood debris which I found on a canoeing site called Song of the Paddle years ago and it's a 'FIRESPOUT' which weighs less than 1kg and (mine is in separate pieces as it's older)folds flat so is infinitely portable. I got the support a pan kit (two steel bars which go across the top ) and it's a fabulous little thing, slightly less cumbersome than the Kelly kettle. I also very blatantly chuck into the debate the love of my life (NO NOT HWK) which is Fatima my OZPIG (because she sometimes feeds the 5,000) which is a non portable but absolutely fantastic garden woodstove with a cooking plate and a warming plate , she's pot bellied stove and too heavy to be portable other than in a vehicle but she would heat water/food for the whole neighbourhood in an emergency situation once she's up to cooking heat and again will run on any wood available but needs bigger branches than twigs. She cost around £200 so is an investment but I love her and we've had such fun using her.....just saying.....

DH has something similar to a Kelly Kettle. I can't remember the name of it, but it essentially does the same thing. You can boil water in it, or cook tinned food in it. He got it for camping.

Then he has another, similar one, which runs off little gas cannisters.

Then we have a camping stove that also runs off gas. And all the cooking utensils that go with it.

Yep. I married a fisherman! lol

I never go around with less than half a tank of petrol. Old habits die hard - a throwback I suppose from the time when I was responsible for caring for elderly parents who lived 100 miles away and I had several emergency "middle of the night" dashes to do with no petrol stations open.

As nobody really knows what potential short term supply problems Brexit might bring, it seems sensible to keep your essential supplies topped up. Who knows when an emergency visit to a hospital or a sick family member might be needed?

back in 2000 when we had the tanker driver disputes we were unable to top up. We had a quarter of a tank of fuel and I made DH stop using the car. This was no mean feat for a man who drove EVERYWHERE!! But I told him if either of the girls developed meningitis like symptoms we HAD to be able to get them to hospital.

I think I may have been influenced by their school nurse - if they went in with a grazed knee, she checked them for meningitis!!

But you never know when an emergency might occur and you'd be thankful you could just drive to wherever you needed to be without having to stop and fill up, even assuming no disruption to supply
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Have just realised that shortage of petrol may mean our lawn and front verges remain uncut and might not get their last winter trim. As we have cut our neighbour' s front verge as well as ours for the last umpteen years (and he is younger than us) it will be interesting to see if he volunteers to return the favour with his electric mower !

It may well give the councils a good excuse for not cutting back the last of the late summer growth on roadside verges though.

I watched the news today. Quite a lot.

    Am now entirely bricking it.

    Great.
    Nevertheless she persisted.
