  • Hi All :)

I've been picking up extra bits for a while now, a can here and there as often as I can, and up until now I'd focused on stuff we would use anyway, like tinned pulses and tinned fruit.

But now I'm at the point where I'm going to start buying things I wouldn't normally use, like long life milk and tinned veg and potatoes.

So I'm going to have tinned veg and potatoes but I don't know how to cook with them. Do you have any advice for me?

Can I make things with long life milk, like custard and sauces, or is it just for putting in tea?

    Please and thank you :)

Whatever you make with fresh milk you can make with long life milk, there is no difference,it makes great yoghurt. We prefer it to fresh milk.
  • Tinned veg and potatoes only need heating as they're already cooked, just read the instructions for timing on the tin.

Oh that's embarrassing - can't believe I didn't think to look on the tin!

    Thank you :)

    Hi guys
According to my Tesco delivery guy they have taken on loads of new warehouses and are busily filling them at the moment. It’s reassuring that they are taking Brexit seriously and are stocking up just in case.

Then there was a bad summer of tomato growers in Europe and the price jumped to 11p-13p and up. There have been about twenty harvests since the bad one which drove the price hikes. As a gardener, I know that the majority of them would have not lead to a dearth of tommies. So, it's funny how things which go up in a bad time somehow never manage to drop back down in a good one...... if you can get tommies at 25p a can these days, you're doing well.

Tescos has both 'East End' chopped tomatoes and 'Summer Pride' chopped tomatoes on a 4 for a £1 offer at the moment (25p a tin), but I wasn't able to find either in stock at my local on Saturday sadly. I settled for the 'Grower's Harvest' at 28p a can instead.

:( My Mr T is a metro store and doesn't have these, sadly. I can get tommies for 28p a can at Liddly. Am eating and stocking Grower's Harvest sweetcorn from T's and it's highly acceptable at 35p a can

Heins Baked beans were £2.75 for 6 cans at Home Bargainz on Sunday, I think the Branston ones may have bean (haha) cheaper. Can always be added to veg soup if you like! Am not a bean connoisseur though, eat them rarely!

Farmfoods have a 12 pack of Heinz beans for £4.99 at the moment. Works out at 42p a can. Ever so slightly cheaper than Home Bargains (just in case someone's town has one and not the other). They also have Princes Tuna (in brine, sunflower oil or spring water), packs of 6 for £3.99 each. This was cheaper than the own branded stuff I could find. And with farmfoods, if you spend £25 you can also print off and use a £2.50 off voucher.

Obviously only worth doing if you are going to spend at least £25 in there anyway. We like our fizzy pop in our house, so I took advantage of the 3 x 24 packs of diet coke for £20, the tuna and the 2 x 3 pints of milk (for £1.60), and used the voucher. Not everything is cheaper in there, of course, so always best to plan in advance and compare prices.

So annoying that your local Mr T doesn't stock them GreyQueen! I'm planning to grow some this year. In fact, I'm keen to try growing black ones (for the novelty). My parents neighbours grew some last year and they look really interesting!! Apparently still red on the inside, which I find a bit trippy! lol
