Blu-Ray Versus HD-DVD

Hi All,

Who do you think will win the battle? I have noticed that some film studios are only releasing on HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray?

What's the cheapest players (non-games console) on the market?

cheers..

This old chestnut! You're going to get people replying who are in both corners. As for price, HD-players are cheaper at around £250, blu-ray players are about £400.

I persoanlly think Blu-Ray will win, I used to think HD would win a the DVD part in HD-DVD would be a brand people recognised and because the players were cheaper, but I'm leaning more towards Blu-Ray now as it can hold more data, and I PREDICT it will hold a larger market share in the long run due to the PS3......

I know the 360 has a HD attachment but to have it all in one box makes a difference to me! Just my opinion but I prefer BD.

It's quite predictable. Neither will win. We'll have two formats to live with and hence the introduction of hybrid players and hybrid discs. I don't know why everybody gets so hung up on the "it must be either or" argument. Everybody lives quite happily with DVD+ and DVD- which never had an outright "winner". In the case of BR and HD-DVD there's too much backing and investment on both sides for either of them to go by the wayside. There's too much of an equal split in both manufacturers and movie studios.

There isn't a preference by the !!!!!! industry. This isn't like the days of betamax versus VHS where there's a clear yes and no to agreeing to licensing of medium to !!!!!! companies. The US !!!!!! industry has a slight preference for HD DVD because Sony won't allow their companies to press !!!!!! titles but this difference is diminishing, and sales of BR discs in total is actually more than HD DVD, also the !!!!!! industry in Japan has a preference for Blu Ray after Sony sold a BR press to a Taiwanese company. Sony are more flexible in their third party agreements after the mistake they made with betamax. As I've already mentioned the major issues with VHS vs Betamax aren't analogous in this format "war". The discs can be manufactured to be both by making a hybrid HD DVD on one side and Blu Ray on the other also the hybrid players are quickly coming down in price. The hybrid solution was impractical for the player and impossible for the cassette with VHS and betamax and although the !!!!!! industry is a major factor, it isn't to the same degree nowadays when there's a compromise solution.

as said its still up in the air.dual format players are due out soon so no matter.
theres also a 3rd format being released soon based on extra layers on standard DVD's
i know there are $200 HD dvd players available in the US but not up on blue ray players for a comparison price

no idea which will win but i dont think the fact they have money behind them automatically means they will both stay coz betamax had sony behind it and it went.
i would wait until it becomes more clear what is going to happen and until they are cheaper.

Dual format players are already out, LG launched one earlier this year.

PS3 plays normal DVD's as well yes.

I have a PS3 and if a studio releases a DVD only on HD-DVD format it doesn't get bought.

Transformers was a pretty good film at the cinema and I may have bought it but won't be bothering to get a HD-DVD player as well.

Studios loss of revenue, I guess they think that people will just keep buying hardware to run all types of formats - well no we'll just do without and wait for Sky or another broadcaster to put it on the TV. Plenty of other choice of films to watch or an activity outside.
