Emirates no show fee with serious illness

  • Your illness was your fault though! It wasn't the airline or anyone else's fault. It's bad luck but that is why you have insurance.

Sometimes life isn't fair but its not for a business to compensate you for that.

I beg to differ Camelot. It wasn’t the airlines fault or anyone else’s and certainly It wasn’t my fault that I got a kidney stone, if I could help it I wouldn’t get them... trust me they are painful, especially two!

The travel insurance business is there to compensate me for being ill! It’s what they advertise!

It is looked on as 'your fault' though. And the person is most 'at fault' compared to the company.

Travel insurance is not there to compensate you. They won't give you more than you are entitled to. The same as contents insurance or car insurance won't 'compensate you' in the event of theft or loss. They are there to cover your losses. Which is appears they have offered to do (minus any agreed excess of course as is the norm with any insurance product)?

I just thought that having travel insurance would help me to get my trip back on track (pay the change fees). You are right that they offered to repay costs to cancel the trip but there was some jargon with this that meant I couldn!!!8217;t recover costs for the flight out and payments for being in hospital or something along those lines. I chose not to take this because I!!!8217;d of had to rebook all my flights again at short notice so at more than double the price and maybe even lose all the money on my outbound flights. It just made no sense concidering I am still going to go in a week or two and Airbnb cancelled and fully refunded me. Yes I understand now that insurers don!!!8217;t care about this, what you want isn!!!8217;t considered, it!!!8217;s just what!!!8217;s the least risk and cheapest for them. I was naive, It!!!8217;s a life lesson.

    If Airbnb hadn!!!8217;t fully refunded me then I would have certainly considered cancelling as that was a big chunk of money so big shout out to them for saving my !!!! !!!55357;!!!56834;

I still hold out hope for emirates, I am loyal to them with their skywards scheme and have had great customer service from them in the past with even a free upgrade on one occasion. I didn!!!8217;t purchase the cheapest !!!8216;saver!!!8217; ticket so I think this will work to my advantage. I!!!8217;m a bit miffed that I can be charged a fee for not showing when I told them that I wouldn!!!8217;t be showing in plenty of time, due to an emergency but I!!!8217;ll wait until I!!!8217;m fit to fly and take it from there with them.

Thanks to everyone who posted, first time on this forum and everyone!!!8217;s been nice with great information. We need to teach consumer rights and personal finances in schools, then idiots like me would know what to expect from insurers and airlines!

I!!!8217;ll update the thread when I am fit to fly and all booked up again just in case anyone is interested in the outcome.

I was still hoping I would be able to catch my flight at 2pm through Dubai to Manila

At 1pm I managed to get outside the hospital whilst waiting for scan results to get mobile signal and rang emirates to notify them that I wouldn’t be checking in

Emirates close their flights one hour before departure. If flight at 2pm, check-in closes as 1pm so I think your "plenty of time" argument may fail especially if you called after the flight had closed (at which point you become a no-show) - I assume that the people you spoke to required the airport to re-open the flight so they could get your booking moved (usually there would be no need to contact the airport)

    Hi,

I probably saved them a couple thousand pounds by not showing up unfit to fly as they would probably of had to divert with the pain I was in before being given painkillers!

Many airlines will pass these costs back to the passenger (and their insurance company).

“I assume that the people you spoke to required the airport to re-open the flight so they could get your booking moved (usually there would be no need to contact the airport)”

She told me that check in was still open, no need to ‘re-open’ the flight, it was already open. I have no idea what their processes are, I just know I had to hold for around 15 minutes whilst she repeatedly tried to call the airport. Just checked call logs on my phone and called them at 12:42 and was on the call for 18 minutes. It was of my understanding that she would still call the airport after I ended the call with her as the doctor was waiting for me to return and so couldn’t wait on hold any longer (I explained this to her). If not then (hopefully) it is on record that I called to advise of my no show.

Thanks for advising that the “plenty of time” argument will proabably fail, I’ll make sure to use different wording when I call them.

(Can’t post url for source of info below as a new user)

“A single flight diversion can cost Emirates anything from US$50,000 to over US$600,000”

“We can never hope to recover the costs of a flight diversion, but the wellbeing of our customers is always our number one priority.”

You may be right pmduk, thanks for the info. I very much doubt I would have needed this though, I’m sure they have some strong painkillers on board and they can call doctors from the plane. I was just venting my anger whilst high on painkillers.

Paid £380 for rebooking of flights (no show fee included). Got extensive (and expensive) specialist travel insurance.

I did have an expensive booking on Airbnb for the first week in Manila which was fully refunded so this lessened the impact.

Info for anyone being asked to pay the no show fee, 3 hours before departure time is the cut off to notify them unless the emirates contact centre can get in touch with the airport which in my case they couldn!!!8217;t.

It!!!8217;s been expensive but I!!!8217;m sure glad this didn!!!8217;t happen 24 hours later and it!!!8217;s been a wake up call in terms of looking after my health. I hadn!!!8217;t drank full sugar coke for around 8 months before the day I had kidney stones when I had two cans whilst already dehydrated on a hot day. Obviously can!!!8217;t be sure that!!!8217;s what!!!8217;s caused it but I!!!8217;m sure it didn!!!8217;t help.

    Thanks all
