Emirates no show fee with serious illness

The NHS is free and our doctors and nurses work really hard.
The NHS is only free if you live entirely on state benefits or have a very low income. Anyone who pays tax and national insurance is paying for the NHS.
Being free at the point of delivery (paid for in advance whether you use it or not) does not excuse poor service. (although in this case OP seems to have received good treatment in a reasonable time scale).0 -
Emirates policy on this sort of issue seems quite generous. On many airlines a cheap ticket is simply cancelled for a no show, regardless of the reason.
Fully flexible tickets are available with many airlines, but they are expensive.0 -
At 10:30am I was advised by the doctor that it was against her medical advice to leave the hospital and get my flight as scans had not been done to see what damage there was yet (thanks NHS for the 6 hour wait).
A couple of things to consider. In A&E patients are treated in order of need. If you've had to wait, it means there are others in greater need. And perhaps more importantly, you were lucky this happened before your backpacking holiday started. I accept it may be a bit too soon for you to see this in perspective but I hope you feel better soon.0 -

Emirates definition of a no-show
- A NO-SHOW FOR A FLIGHT IS CONSIDERED WHEN A
PASSENGER FAILS TO REPORT TO THE AIRPORT AS
BOOKED TWO HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE OF THE
SCHEDULED FLIGHT.
On the lowest published fare LHR-MNL and further down it states:
CHANGES AGAINST NO SHOW
- A NO-SHOW FOR A FLIGHT IS CONSIDERED WHEN A
PASSENGER FAILS TO REPORT TO THE AIRPORT AS
BOOKED TWO HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE OF THE
SCHEDULED FLIGHT.
- FAILURE TO UTILISE TICKET AS BOOKED ON ANY
SEGMENT OF THE ITINERARY WILL RESULT IN ALL
SUBSEQUENT SEGMENTS OF THE ITINERARY BEING
CANCELLED. IN SUCH CASES NO-SHOW FEE WILL APPLY
- IN CASE OF NO-SHOW ONLY ONE FEE IS TO BE CHARGE
I.E. EITHER THE NO-SHOW FEE OR THE CHANGE FEE
WHICHEVER IS HIGHER AND NOT BOTH.
OP are they charging you a change fee or is it an increase in the fare?0 -

You should probably read the terms and exclusions of the insurance you're taking out before you choose i then.
Unless Boots terms say otherwise, then a full refund is more than adequate for cancelling the holiday. If the excess is too high, you should've chosen an insurer with a lower excess. It's a risk v reward thing - I'm potentially significanly over insured (I probably pay close to £100 a month in insurances, including car insurance), but I know that if anything were to go wrong I have sufficient cover to not impact my lifestyle. It may turn out to be a waste of money, but that's the risk I'm willing to take (and it's how the insurance game works).
While you will get sympathy for your illness, that's all you'll get here.
In summary - don't enter into contracts that have financial penalties you're not willing to incur if things go wrong at your end.0 -
Thanks for all your replies, I think my questions have been answered. I’ll pay whatever fees they ask if they give no other option. In my opinion I don’t think it is fair for a company in any industry to be able to charge you for a service that you cannot receive by no fault of your own due to a sudden illness, especially when it would put others health and safety at risk. This is just my opinion but I understand the other side of the argument.
I didn’t mean to paint the NHS in a bad light, it’s the first time I got to experience a&e and I was shocked with the abuse given to staff by patients clearly just drunk.
Thanks for that info heliflyguy, that’s really useful. Emirates have told me that it is up to their Manchester airport staff to remove the no show fee, I have also been told that there will be a rebooking fee. I can see that their conditions are one or the other whichever is higher so I’ll make sure to not get ripped off there. I’m just wondering if I could be charged a no show fee if I called to say I wouldn’t be showing well before check in closed.
Yes I did report my previous kidney stone to boots.
Yes I am lucky this happened whilst in the UK and not in PH.
This wasn’t the cheapest ‘saver’ ticket, it was the one above which I think is called ‘flex’.
I had to pay over £35 on medication (May not be a lot to some people but I’m a poor student)
Couldn’t agree with you more Tazer, id say 50% of the patients were just drunk.
Thanks pink shoes, I will shop around to see what my best cover options are now. I couldn’t fly and then go private as the pain was excruciating. I’d got through a kidney stone before without any intervention, unfortunately this was 2 stones and a blocked up kidney.
I have never had to claim on insurance before munchpot. I always thought of travel insurance as cover for emergency healthcare and keeping your holiday on track not change the start date of the cover on you when an illness covered by the insurance occurs and not help you with any of the changes. I’m not interested in cancel and claim but I see how this could be a good option if you wanted to do that with a company that has low excesses. I didn’t choose their cheapest cover option, all I wanted to do was get help with emirates change fees, I don’t understand why they won’t help with that and only give me the option to cancel the holiday or the cover. Again just my opinion.
Thanks for the info Caz, I couldn’t give them a new date to fly unfortunately but did tell them I wouldn’t be showing at the airport.0 -

That comes as a shock to everyone the first time they witness it. Nobody on here would begin to justify it I hope.0 -
you all seem to be on the side of the insurance or airline.
Knowing the MSE forumites well (10+ years), I sincerely doubt that :rotfl::heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Haha, I think most people are! But by that I mean I must be very much in the wrong and expecting too much from the insurance and airline.0
