Used car troubles

It's a 13yo car, for which the going rate would be mid 3-figures at most. You appear to want the moon on a stick.0

And this is why you never take a car to Kwik Fit for anything other than tyres. That is complete and utter !!!!!!!!. There may be a ridge of muck that looks like rust around the edge but that can be sorted by tapping it with a hammer on the corner edge of the disc whilst you rotate it which chips it off, something which mechanics used to do as a routine during a service 20 years ago
I'd expect a 12 year old used car to have water in the brake fluid, that itself isn't a MOT failure. The scraping noise my extremely well maintained Mondeo will make if its been raining overnight for a short while until the pads rub the surface rust off the discs. Brake discs are made of ferrous metal so they'll get surface rust on them if the brakes aren't used for a while. This is normal and not a reason to change them.
Saying it illegally passed a MOT because of dodgy brakes when you've taken a car to Thick Gits for a brake test isn't really fair given the tyre fitters at Thick Gits aren't actually qualified mechanics and are trained to sell people stuff, usually stuff they don't need which is why they offer free brake inspections. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I have posted this on here before and will no doubt again. I had and old MG years ago, myself and my neighbour replaced the brakes on all 4 corners. Took it to KwikFit to get a tyre and sure enough I got the "Do you know you need brakes replacing all round?" when I explained that I had just done them his response was "Oh, I must be getting confused at its a different car he meant" aye, whatever!0

I wouldn't take my car to Kwik Fit again for tyres, I wouldn't take it there again for an oil change. In my experience there is literally nothing they can't screw up.
A group of bonobos with a socket set would be more likely to fix your car than a branch of Kwik Fit.0 -
I would never set foot in a Kwik Fit ever. Not after the BG44K scam they tried to pull on me (well they did but I got it refunded) during an MOT 5 year ago or so.0

What is a BG44K scam? I'm intrigued.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
It's one of those expensive extra-virgin cold-pressed python products. Fuel system cleaner, in this case, because obviously petrol isn't a good enough solvent.iolanthe07 wrote: »What is a BG44K scam? I'm intrigued.

To echo what others have said, i've also been 'advised' that I need brakes at kwik-fuk when i've been unfortunate enough to use them for tyres.
This is a 12 year old car, with used brakes.
Remember that the MOT is merely an inspection to verify that the vehicle is OK on the day tested. They cannot predict the number of miles you're going to do over the next year, and will only post an advisory if something is likely to need replacement very soon.
It is NOT a guarantee that the car will not need further work for the next year!
As other have said, it sounds like the noise is just rust on the discs which will go after a few miles.
I'd suggest getting a real garage to check the brake pipes however.0
