Hot water tank not heating off peak

Hello,

I have Telford tempest boiler with timeswitch. I have programmed off peak heating and I can use manual/timed boosts. Boost is working but I have problem as off peak heating water is not working. It's lighting Economy on timeswitch but in the morning I don't have hot water.

I checked my electricity tarriff and I have standard one rate tarriff (not Economy 7 with nights/off peak cheaper tarriff). Is it possible that boiler knows that during night it doesn't have cheaper electricity and that's why it's not working? Or it must be some technical fault and it need to be examined by plumber etc.?

Many thanks for help as I don't have enough people with boosting manually and it's obviously more expensive.

Thank you

PS. Flat and boiler has under 2 years old so it's pretty new.

Why program anything for offpeak if you are not on an E7 tariff?
You heater won'the know anything about the tariff you are on.
Suggest you need an electrician/plumber to check it. If you have a boost that works OK, your tank may have a twin element heater and the normal one has stopped working.

As you are on a single rate tariff its no more expensive during the day than at night.

Try selecting the time switch to Continuous - it will be on at all times.

Just as aside have you been there since new and has the hot water ever worked (and do you do the monthly meter reads and have you ever switched suppliers) ?

@spiro: i program for e7 as my timer to boiler has options to program: off peak times (for example 12-7), timed boost and manual boost (30,60,120mins). The problem is boost is using only part of tank as it's on top and is fastest to what. So after 1 shower I don't have enough for 2 shower...

I will check my meter readings this night when set up on off peak heating if any electricity changes, if not I will be sure that this part is jot working. But is it any option it's not fault of boiler/tank but my tarriff and I will be unable to use off peak options of my boiler?

@Robin: i just moved in 2 weeks ago, I was surprised when I received letter from British gas saying that I'm on standard tarriff as this kind of boiler I believe is only good option when on economy 7 tarriff.

I don't have continuous option, I can maybe set up timed boost for 24hours but I believe it's only working on top of tank so I will be out of water I think anyway and cost would increase drastically.

As per post #2, it is most likely that the off-peak element or its thermostat have failed. The tarrif wont affect the controls.

'Standard tariff' does not mean single rate. Standard comes in both single rate and E7 versions with every supplier. It's also the most expensive option, so get off it ASAP.
Check your meter, if it's dual rate then it will have more than one register (day and night rate). Your bill will also show if it is charging day and night rate units.
If you have only a single rate meter, then you can't get E7 unless you change the meter.
PS: you don't have a boiler, you have an immersion heater. If (on a new build) that has been wired to a single rate meter, then the developers are utterly clueless.
If you do have a dual rate meter and are being charged on a single rate (not unknown), then ask BG to switch you to the E7 tariff.
PPS: if the flat is only 2 years old then any repair to the immersion heater should be covered under the NHBC warranty.

Well I suppose anything is possible however unlikely...

My guess is the lower immersion heater is broken.
Or if you are lucky, a faulty thermostat.

Anyone with basic electrical knowledge would be able to check without removing either for closer inspection.

Whilst removal and replacement of the immersion heater is also quite straightforward for any competant DIY-er, if you are not confident, then you are correct employ the services of an expert (a plumber).

Sadly, although the replacement is quite starightforward, the cost is quite high because you will be paying the plumber to sit there and drink your tea/coffee for an hour or more whilst he watches the tank slowly drain of water.
Expect to pay at least £200 for a plumber to replace the lower immersion heater.

I will contact agency, as I'm renting flat I'm sure they will cover this repair costs.
