Hi
This is not a joke post or anything !!!8211; but I have just moved into a new (to me) house, that was badly nicotine stained.
It!!!8217;s not anymore its all clean now , however I took out the BT Telephone Master socket because it was filthy inside and out !!!8211; and had their awful vinyl (nicotine stained) wall paper all over it.
And I want to put the wall paper behind the faceplate so it looks neat.
So the reason is I want to replace it with another nice clean one, which I have bought online !!!8211; and I am absolutely fine with wiring it up etc. I also know that I shouldn!!!8217;t really touch it because its BT!!!8217;s property !!!8211; however I don!!!8217;t want to have to pay their call out charges, just to replace with another one.
However I was reading this website (Section 2) which goes on about how illegal it is to fiddle about with it !!!8211; and yes if I was trying to tap into the system to get free phone calls then fair enough !!!8211; but I just want to replace the front of it with a neater face plate.

What they going to do, send round armed police, cuff me up and lock me up with real crims?
If I connect it all back together and the phone suddenly rings and its BT on the phone telling me off because I have replaced the faceplate, couldn!!!8217;t I just deny all knowledge and say it was the previous home owner?

If you want it replaced then pay their fee.
Simples.
You have no business interfering with it.0 -
Just do it, who's going to know or care!?
We replaced the master socket at our old house with a faceplate that matched the light switches and sockets (nothing fancy, just new white MK plastic ones to replace all the old cracked/yellow/paint covered ones). We also had Openreach come at a later date to install fibre, so a deeper BT box which we obviously left in place from that point as it was clean and white unlike the old one we replaced. He said absolutely nowt about our 'illegal' tampering with the faceplate. They don't care.0 -
I have removed/moved telecom demarcation points on several occasions; I am sure I will move more.
I have yet to be arrested, although the crack Openreach death-squad could be looking up my IP address at this very moment.
I have no regrets!0 -
If the inspection police arrive at some future point you can always say it must have been installed before you moved in!0

Just do what you want, even if someone turned up and actually cared how would they prove your guilt and not the previous home owners ?0

I changed ours for a brushed metal one from screwfix,if BT ever come round i bet the engineer would not give a jot about it.0

I have moved a master socket (only across by about 6 inches as it was in the way of something). I am yet to see anyone who claims it to be illegal actually cite what law is being broken.
If you know what you!!!8217;re doing just replace it. It!!!8217;s not rocket science. If you can use a punchdown tool it!!!8217;s easy. Obviously if you mess it up you!!!8217;re going to have to pay for somebody to fix it anyway.0 -
Never mess with your BT socket.
And NEVER make a pretty woman your wife.....Was it really "everybody" that was Kung Fu fighting ???0 -
Just remember their is some voltage there0
