I would expect screen brightness to be hardware controlled by the computer independent of operating system. Have you tried using your keyboard, it's Fn and F2 on mine to reduce brightness.

Have you tried using Settings, what used to be called Control Panel.

Left click on the Start Button (bottom left), left click on Settings (immediately above power button) then left click on System.

The first option should be Display and should have a slider for adjusting brightness.

Select Display if it is not the first option.

On my Acer laptop, Fn + left and right arrow keys adjust brightness.

Check if your graphics drivers need updating maybe.

Try setting up the display calibration. I find that makes a big difference. Open the settings and type 'calibrate' into the search box. Select 'Calibrate display colour'.
Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.

What happens when you open up Settings and Display as above?

What do you see on the screen?
